And, BTW, they also brew a great Kölsch (keeping to topic ). None of this weird, "innovative" stuff labeled as Kölsch.

Their Kolsch isn't too shabby, either! Best of both, perhaps?

To me they are both great beers when done properly.
I would give my left reproductive organ to drink them in the homeland.
That is, if you can drag me away from the Salvator.

Unfortunately I was unable to attend Traditional Kölsch Service Night at Workhorse Brewery a few weeks ago:

    “Traditional Kölsch Service Night

    8/10/2022 3:00 pm - 8/10/2022 9:00 pm

    Want another beer? Say Less!

We will be serving our new Kölsch, Say Less, in traditional fashion using a small, .2L stange glass. When your glass is empty, please stay seated and our staff will replace it with a full one as well as leaving a mark on your coaster to keep track of your tab. Once you’ve had your fill, place your coaster on top of your glass to signal to the team that you’re all done! Each .2L stange glass will be $3!”

    https://www.workhorsebrewing.com/events/traditional-kolsch-service-night

That would have been a fun thing to do.

    Prost!

Not a style, just a beer loved in Baltimore but not served in DC

Notch does this too. I was lucky enough to attend one last December. It's pretty fun!

Well, I did in fact Uber home. But I wasn’t really all that drunk.

While they keep serving you more, it’s just 0.2 L (~7 oz.) glasses of beer at 4.5% ABV.

@Snowcrash000, @JackHorzempa or others — are you able to comment / expand on the supposed “puckish” nature of köbes waiters (mentioned in passing in the article)?

That cliché about the Köbesse definitely exists, but it's really more about them being persons of authority that you are not supposed to fuck with and that are more obliged to the customs of the brewery than the customer. They are supposed to be curt and witty but while a good Köbes will present this in a charming manner, a bad one is just going to come across as an asshole.

I'm also not sure how alive this tradition really is anymore, it's obviously going to vary a lot from place to place and from person to person.

So "puckish" (playful, especially in a mischievous way), probably isn't the proper definition for the Köbesee?

(FWIW -- it's not a term I'd use for the Schneiderhaus Fräuleins either.)

Very interesting, thanks. A lot of Americans expect emotional labor from their servers, but I’m from a region that tends to prefer brusque-to-surly competence. Puckishness sounds like it could be a fun change of pace — if I were on vacation, particularly if drunk. Not sure if I’d enjoy it on the regular. :beers:

I am enjoying some Von Trapp kolsch right now actually.

I really like both Alt and Kolsch and the beer culture that both cities offer, I think it's a great contrast.

I kind of like the idea also that it in a way "physically" forces you out of your comfort zone to try new things if you want. I am not so sure if that's how it is from a German perspective, in fact I would say in my opinion culturally and beer culturally it isn't. That's not necessarily a bad thing either.

We spent an afternoon pub crawling in Koln drinking Kolsch, then took the train to Dusseldorf and spent the evening drinking alt. I love the Kolsch, but the alt will always be my favorite

I really hope we can take a family trip to Germany in the future. I would love to experience it firsthand.

Their Kölsch is just straight up awesome. Nothing like pounding a few of those fresh at the brewery

This is the site we've used to travel through Germany-we would stay 3 nights in one place, then pack up and head 3 or 4 hours down the road to another brewery/guesthouse. Each one has a bathroom in the room(seems normal to an American but it's not necessarily over there), most have excellent restaurants and they all have excellent beer.
