I am heading to Koln on Sunday. Sorry for the improper spelling as I don't have the correct keyboard or know the right command for the o. My wife is in full on Christmas market fever and we are heading there for her 5th market in the past two weeks. Where do I need to go to get a good Kolsch beer that is in the Christmas market area. I am an American living in the Ramstein AFB area (Schonenberg-Kubelberg). I have been to Koln once and I did not seek out any bier.

    Prost!!

Malzmuehle is right off the Heumarkt, where the Christmas market is. Excellent Koelsch, good food, and a "gemuetliche" atmosphere.

Appropriate time to give the "ALT 0246" for ö and "ALT 0252" for ü

This has nothing to do with Alt being in Köln, which as we know might get you beheaded..

I was going to say this, although full disclosure I've never been to Malzmühle. What I understand is that there are many markets throughout the city, and so Früh am Dom should also be close to a Christmas Market.

I visited last year - I didn't get to spend enough time there by any means, but I really enjoyed Gasthaus-Brauerei Braustelle

You won't find traditional Kolsch there, but I really enjoyed their offerings.

If you're using a Mac, 1) hit Option-U, then2) the letter a, o or u to get the Umlaut. ¨ if you don't type another key. Another way to do it is 1) type " (the quotation mark), 2) then the letter a,o, or u. ä, ö, ü. The Eszett, or "scharfes S" is done with typing Option-S ß. That's all I got. On an iPhone, simply tap and hold the a, o, u, s until you see a row of options, then tap on the one you want. I got nuttin' for Windows/Android computers/devices.

Here're some pics of the Weihnachtsmarkt I took in FFM a few years ago.

This year hasn't had any snow, so below is as closest to snow I've seen this year:

And Glühwein being heated up on an evening that was -14C, or about 5F.

    And of course drinking it.

Maybe not on-topic, but since this is also about Weihnachtsmärkte now and I don't want to post it in the Benelux-forum: here's a Liefmans Glühkriek I had today at the Weihnachtsmarkt in Wiesbaden. They had it on tap, but I also could take a bottle with me! I'm not a big fan of fruit beers, but drinking it hot is a good alternative to the usual Glühwein which is much too sweet for my taste.

Has anyone been to the Dresden Christmas Market? I'm nearly certain they had something very similar to this there.

    “The Americanisation of Germany continues...”

Two German breweries (Brauerei Heller & Gasthaus-Brauerei Braustelle) are brewing German style beer (Altbier) in a German City (Koln/Cologne). I don’t see the “Americanisation” part here. It seems to me that some Germans decided to produce German style beer in a German city (Koln/Cologne).

    Prost!

Think about a Philly team's biggest rival (Penguins in hockey? Giants in football?) and then imagine a Penguins IPA/Giants Imperial Stout being brewed in Philly. Just some American brewers brewing an American beer in a U.S city, right?

The "Americanisation" part comes in with the notion that "more [variety] is better"...everywhere. Duesseldorf is literally right up the highway from Koeln and can be drunk there by anyone anytime. So putting an Altbier brewery there would be like locating a Mets minor league team in Philly. Insult to injury, really

Providing beer consumers with freedom of choice has nothing to do with sports franchises, it is all about how a market economy works. I am not an economics history person but I have never understood that a market economy equates solely to America (or Americanization). Maybe somebody on BA is an economist and can shed some light on this matter.

    Prost!

The beer rivalry between Koelsch and Alt is VERY MUCH analogous to a sports rivalry. Matter of fact, if they were given the "freedom of choice," I highly suspect the majority of citizens from either Duesseldorf or Koeln would vote to ban the others' beer from their city altogether.

EDIT: but, again...whatever. Believe or don't believe anything I say. I've grown used to it by now.

Maybe the same. The Weihnachtsmarkt in Wiesbaden (called Sternschnuppenmarkt => "falling star market") has been very popular with international tourists since its complete redesign a couple of years ago. Other cities, Dresden included, also have very popular Weihnachtsmärkte. Maybe Liefmans or their distributor picks out some of the most popular to sell it there.
