Soju is awful, but I downed quite a bit of it just fit in with my coworkers. Only costs like 1,000W for a bottle. Had a green apple one once that I thought was tasty. But it could've been because I was already drunk.

Lets being race into beer... Fun. There are much more relevant race related craft beer issues. They always get deleted here though so have fun boys.

Yeah lived and worked in Korea for a few years...it's called "one shot" if you have a beer in your hand...no matter how full, if someone says "one shot" you have to finish it without setting it down.

There aren't really any "premium" bottled beers...the best would probably be a Queenstone Ale but they have a few solid micro's which have popped up in the past few years, Maloney's, Hand & Malt, Galmegi and Magpie all produce some solid beers.

Also, Guiness is pretty expensive over there, usually around $10-14 a pint.

I rarely touched the stuff, although I remember going on a pretty good soju induced bender on a Friday & I swear I could still smell that stuff coming through my pores on a Monday after a 3 mile run, for sure I still felt like crap on Sunday:grimacing:

I was born in Seoul and I still love Guinness although nowadays I prefer Foreign Extra and some Koreans can definitely drink but a lot cannot. Some years ago a friend of mine said that if I could drink 10 pints of Guinness in a single sitting, she would pick up the tab. 10 pints later, I was full and didn't have to pay a penny for it!

It's not the 70s. Or even the 80s. The quality of subway rat meat is much higher now. It's everything Koch envisioned.

Hell yea they can, like it's their job! There is almost a ritual aspect to it....much more than just social drinking.

And then you have somak....the dreaded soju/beer combination. I really did enjoy the soju/korean bbq after work get togethers though. Lived there for almost 3 years.

The Cherry stuff was entertaining for me back in the day!!

It's the makkoli that will kill you I swear... :grimacing:

So much of the beer was classic mass produced industrial adjunct stuff with lots of rice... it was like drinking paper...

Just so long they don't start wearing green and lapsing into transe-like Gaelic, I'm OK. Those jack-booted North Korean crowds of soldiers in those parades I just witnessed need something other than Kim-Jong-un's medicine.

That's for sure. I was acting in a movie some years ago, which was shot by an entirely Korean crew (the director himself spoke very little English...he had a young American born Korean gal translating for my benefit). I learned a LOT about Korean food during the production (and since then, have enjoyed kimchee for lunch almost every day since) and I also learned about the crew's capacity for massive amounts of Soju. I liked the Soju, actually, but while I'm known to be able put away a fair amount of ethanol, I sure couldn't keep up with the formidable pace at which they were downing the stuff.
All I can say is that it was sure a jolly crew.:grinning:
