So I wanted to put this question out there to see what people think:

I live in the bay area and have easy access to PtE. I was lucky enough to win the KRBC lottery and have rights to go buy some of the Citra. I have never had it, but KRBC is almost 6 hours away.

Is KRBC Citra worth the drive (12 hours round trip) when I can scoot over to RRBC at will to grab some PtE?

No it is not. Your time is more valuable than that. Now may I purchase the afore-mentioned lottery ticket from you please?

........Is driving 12 hours for a beer worth it when you can get Pliny........Is this a serious question, or bragging about your pliny proximity. Anyhoo...you're in the bay. Just go to Toronado and call it a day.

Is the experience worth more than the beer? Is it possible the trip alone is worth the twelve hours? Taking the beers and your preference out of it there is no way the beer is worth that trip. But if the trip alone is worth the time, your preference is paramount. Which beer do you prefer? Hop profile?

I have driven 12 hours round trip to hang out with some friends. Sure, I had some very good beers, not great but very good. If I can scoot over to RR to grab Pliny anytime I would definitely think about making the trip, hanging out and grabbing some Citra.

They make you enter a lottery for the privilege to buy beer? That seems odd to me!

I knew the bragging thing would come out as soon as I hit the post button...not bragging at all. Just interested in getting an opinion from someone that has had both. They are both world class DIPAs so...

Why would you enter the lottery if you weren't sure you were even going to buy the beer?

Why not just go to Toranado when they have it on tap? Thats how I got to try it.

Both are outstanding! If it's worth making the drive for the experience and a beer equally as good as Pliny...then go for it!

It's becoming kinda common. It's to control the amount of people attending a release so it doesn't get out of control. Upland does the same thing.

I was actually kidding, my response of going to Toronado was not a joke, as both are there at times.

I agree with kzoobrew. I won the lottery and its a 4 hr drive each way. But I am splitting my 6 bottles with 2 friends. It's gonna be one fun experience with the anticipation of trying citra and then getting to drink other KRBC beers I haven't had. If I drove by myself grabbed my 6 bottles and drove home to drink by myself, not worth it.

I would say make the trip. When you look back on the many hours you'll waist doing menial things 12 hours in the grand scheme won't matter much. Plus, as others have said, the experience will be worth it. For Darkness Day, there have been people who I've personally talked to who've flown in from as far as San Diego for DDay. Now, people drove up from Fla, IND, etc... Diehards for whalez bro....

You should make the trip, otherwise why did you bother entering. Someone else would have won those bottles that would be willing to make the drive. And I'm not saying that as a jaded loser of the lottery as I also won. However if I wasn't sure that I would be willing to go get them I would not have entered.

Agreed!!! I live closer to kern river and I have had PTE and Citra side by side, yes Citra is significantly better!! That being said, I would totally take an 11 hour round trip to Santa Rosa to have me some Pliny straight from the teet!!!

The brewery is tiny and they only brew this beer a couple of times each year! Each time they have brewed this beer there have been people who come from hundreds of miles away to get bottles but go home empty handed! The brewery did the lottery to prevent that heartache (pain in the ass) from happening. The good news is the brewery will still have Citra on tap for those that want to drive there anyway!

I've had Kern Citra once would not drive that far for it. I like Abrasive better than Kern, Ht is better. My opinion only. I'd find a mule, pay for the beer and give him a cut, you pay to ship it to you. Simple. Guys use trustees for Bruery stash , this wouldn't be much different .

Its been a while since I've had Heady Topper and Citra side-by-side...

Each time I have had them side-by-side I find Citra to edge out Heady Topper, my opinion only!! Pliny is also an awesome beer and I would love to try Abrasive!!
