I found this place on BA's list of beer places in my state, and was intrigued just by the name and appearance of the place. So a couple of my oldest friends and I made plans to go to there for drinks/food one day (they have a very nice menu). It was pretty busy when we arrived, without a lot of room to move around. The waitress gave us a booth by a window, which was nice, as that part of Sparta is very nice just to look at. Our waitress was very kind and polite. She took all of our orders by memory, and everything came out correctly. I had a turkey club, and my friends had a Cajun spice burger and a portabella burger. All of the food was excellent, fresh, and served promptly. My friends wanted to try their current seasonal (an oatmeal cookie stout), but they had sold out. I ordered the Krogh's Gold, their original beer, and my friend ordered their Nut Brown Ale. The beers themselves were excellent as well. The KG was a beautiful honey gold, with a small head and an unobtrusive level of carbonation. I cannot speak for the types of hops or malts they use; I did not think to ask. It had a very nice aroma; to me it smelled like fresh grains and springtime. The NBA was extremely dark; brown with an almost birch beer red around the edge of the glass. It had a softer texture than the KG, and a full, earthy flavor. We will definitely be going back. The downsides to the place are that it is very small, and very expensive. My sandwich and beer cost me almost $20. Worth it for a day out with good company.
Krough's is a decent little, out of the way, place. Intimate and rustic with a somewhat bizarre hunting lodge ambience. The food is filling and the beers are very nice - the fact that these brews cannot be found outside this venue make its' uniqueness even more so.
