Hey, all. Have a work trip to KL in April but literally know nothing about the beer scene there. Any help/tips/info would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers!

Hi, sorry I missed this. I know it’s too late but I’ll add some notes here since I know how hard info is to come by in case anyone else is making a trip soon. I visited KL last September.

Finding a beer in KL is easy. Finding a good beer is hard. Beer is also relatively expensive by local standards, though not quite Singapore bad.

brewing laws are tough so the only actual brewery I could find in KL - despite 8M people in the Klang Valley - was called Tap Room at Paperkite in a trendy development called Bamboo Hills, about halfway between KLCC and Batu Caves. It’s a nano brewery so only a couple of beers on offer and when I visited 2 the 6 taps were out and a third was just a fruit infused version of their pale ale. It was ok beer. The menu was interesting and tbh I regret not trying some of the mocktails. Muslim countries do mocktails well.

Beyond that you’re probably looking at a beer bar. Most of the craft beer bars had very similar selection since even importing beer is limited (this is Tiger town). I liked Farmers Bar in a mall near KLCC. Good food, marginally the best selection of beer including lots of imports from Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong, America and elsewhere in Asia. I remember being shocked to see four week old Deschutes there Few randos like the Garden Brewery from Croatia which I have only ever seen in Malaysia but it’s everywhere.

I did also like a place called Wellcraft which is near Mount Kiara. It was more the classic SE Asia bar: football on tv, Heineken and Tiger, open air bar with covered outside seating - but they did have nearly every bottled beer available in KL. Not the worlds best bar but IMO a more local experience (opposed to high end bamboo hills or KLCC) and plenty of good beers.

There were other places I wanted to try but time was limited and the beer scene was pretty underwhelming. Not terribly surprising for a majority Muslim country of course and I was happy to have some beer.

please report back what you experienced!

@jophish17 Hey! Thanks for the reply… Even if it was after my trip

I think you summed up my experience perfect. Finding beer in KL was easy. Finding good beer seemed like a challenge. I did make my way to Beer Bank which outside of being in the back of a grocery store, had a great selection and I really enjoyed the experience there. I wish I would have known about your recommendation close to KLCC since that was super close to where I was staying. Next time though

Overall, KL was fantastic though. I’m still amazed at how friendly all the people were. Travel was tough but definitely worth it to spend some time over there.

    Cheers!

This is you haven't tried to find beer in Putrajaya yet  .
In general, Malaysia is not a beer country, but the quality of beer is well offset by the quality of nature. So beer is best found on the beaches of Langkawi or Georgetown

The best beer bar in KL called House of Hops. I visited it a month ago, they had a lot of The Bruery, Verdant and even Anchorage.
