Good on you. Just realise that employees that work there won't consider you as a customer that they enjoy serving when you walk through the doors.

Just on a sidenote to this, I wouldn't be averse in this situation to keep all those fresher carton/s of IPA in the backroom to make sure that the customer can't get to it and we sell through the older stock first.

Actually if they are within one or two days of each other or the date printed on is still sufficiently long enough away, I pick up the milk regardless.

Interesting perspective. My own differs in that I prioritise my own enjoyment of flavoursome beer (and milk I wont have to waste) over my concerns for Woolworths/Wesfarmers bottom line.

Bottom line yeah I suppose but it is more of an annoyance having a customer buck the trends of the staff's efforts to rotate beer. And this not only applies to 4pk/6pk in the fridge but relates to rotating of cartons in stacks on the floor and in the coolroom etc - if every customer took the same approach as you stores would be that much more inclined to sell out of stock first and then get new stock in after. And that doesn't really work for anyone because it will inevitably deprive people of their favourite beers...

Your not going to win this argument  If there wasn't such a tendency for shops to sell old beer, this situation would not exist. 1 month difference in code is no big deal, but I'm not going to put up with 3 months. Most shops are stocking far too many beers to make a rotation policy work. You are sacrificing freshness for selection, in a hunt for profit. I.e. we are not going to accept a BB Dec13 or Jan14 beer today (especially local beers) when we want one that was bottled in the last month or two. Sorry, it just wont fly. It's the equivalent of buying milk expiring tomorrow, as opposed to 10 days from now. A couple of days difference wouldn't matter, but a couple of weeks is a dealbreaker (for milk). Same way 3-6 months difference is a dealbreaker for anyone who truly enjoys beer. Get your turnover / stocking / refrigeration policy correct, and we'll respect your rotation policy......Not a personal attack - comment applies in general to bottlos across WA.

And another reason the beer lovers avoid unfresh beers is that in our summer - they are often well and truly gone with 3+ months left on the BB, as the heat has destroyed them. Overstocked beer is often left in hot storerooms, etc.

IPAs are way too expensive in Australia to not attempt to optimise freshness when buying them

I wouldn't ever buy undated IPAs unless I can verify freshness independently (e.g. knowing that the beer was brewed recently or speaking to an employee about when the shipment came in)

How am I going to when most of you are customers?

Well it usually takes about 3 months to sell through a craft carton in the 4pk/6pk fridges

I hear ya but in saying that I would prefer to offer more choice than smaller choice especially given that nearly all of my customers don't bother to check the dates (all my beers are within best befores though :stuck_out_tongue:)

Not at smaller shops but at 1st Choices I do agree that you might find a beer that has been stored in a storeroom for up to a month before going into the air con of the store but I would say there would be a less than 1% chance that you would end up drinking it.

    i gotta agree with darwin.
if you dont like the way the store does it, dont shop there. simple
dont make my life hard just because you want to tear one out of one of the cartons in the cool room rather than take from the 6 pack fridge just cause you want a fresher version.
cause you know what i do when i find it. i find the a six pack off the shelf and go back in and tape it in to the carton just to spite you. ive had numerous occasions where one customer has done it then ill have a customer that want to buy that case but cant because some arse has done this to it. normally carlton cold and super dry drinkers are the main culprits where i am.
on another point i can only name 3 brands in the craft beer section that dont get a huge turn over in the store i work in. you would be hard pressed to find a craft beer out of date there unless it was sent to us from the warehouse that way and it does happen.

    Standard practice :grinning:

The only problem with this and another reason why I dislike customers ripping open cartons for 'fresher' 6 packs is that customers will tend to avoid buying a taped up carton and you may have it sit there for ages thereafter.

I don't think the point of some of the others is about the beer they are trying to avoid is out of date but rather just "relatively aged" - being within 3 months of it being produced which isn't all that old and undrinkable to begin with

I get my IPA's directly from the bright tank to my mouth. No stores necessary.

Serious question though - why doesn't Feral do growlers from the taps ? Many would visit a lot more if that was the case.

he might not like other places doing growlers but it wouldn't surprise me if their liquor license doesn't allow them anyway

we have some ridiculous rules in WA, just ask mash & beaten track
