From my time living near both breweries, I would have to say that Founders has a much larger Michigan presence, but I'm interested to hear what people prefer.

I prefer Founders for my various Coffee stout needs; while I prefer Kuhnhenn to help fulfill my Barrel aged Old Ale needs.

Founders has the bigger presence, because they are much bigger.

That's true, but a large brewery doesn't guarantee notoriety. Bells is larger than Founders, but I would argue that their presence isn't as big.

Comparing these two breweries is like comparing seafood to steak. Their approach on beers and styles are completely different. Both make excellent beer.

Kuhnhenn is a bit more experimental with their stuff. Their Double Rice IPA was so rediculously good, and they make an oktoberfest. I have yet to see one from Founders.

DRIPA was and still IS awesome. They haven't stopped making it.... I hope. Heading there next week for a taste or 5.

I wanted a growler when I had it at World Beer Fest in Durham. Seriously. I was content drinking just that, Great Lakes Imperial Dortmunder, and Magic Hat BA Chaotic Chemistry.

Founders bottles and distributes widely. Kuhnhenn is basically a brewpub who bottles a VERY little bit of their beer.

I prefer them both. Be happy that you live near two world class breweries, and imho, trying to figure out which one is better or more represented is unnecessary.

I don't understand the question. I will say that Kuhnhenn is smellier, if that counts for anything.

Kuhnhenn is a completely different beast, considering they also make wine and mead. I'm also less familiar, as their stuff doesn't make it out to Grand Rapids often, and I've only been to the pub once. That said, I prefer Founders, because of price and availability. Would love to eventually explore Kuhnhenn more when I have the money to blow.

Oh please, more people have heard of and drink Bells than Founders. You could look it up.

But maybe you have some wacky Ba definition of presence?

I'm down in the Columbus, Ohio area and I've been drinking Bells for well over 10yrs now. I've only recently discovered Founders within the the last 18mos.

Founders is better simply because of their quality control. I've never had a founders beer with a cracked bottle or mold inside but I have had both from kuhnhenn. To hate on kuhnhenn once again this week, if you are going to bottle and charge as much as you do why can't you please just monitor the operation a little better. If bottling is such an issue just stop until the issues are gone, sure your barrel aged barley wine is tasty but not with a chunk of glass inside since whoever capped it smashed part of the bottle.

That being said, both brewpubs are very fun, founders has better music but kuhnhenn does make some very strange but delicious styles that founders does not. I prefer founders overall but that's mostly based on my frustrations with kuhnhenn.

So now not only do I not understand the question, but I don't understand the answers.

Kuhnhenn came to Durham for Beerfest.. .I basically stayed at their spot once I found them... Some of the best beer I had there... Founders is better because they produce great beer and market it a whole lot better!

Ninjas or Pirates? Burgers or Tacos? T or A? Kuhnhenns or Founders? I say there's room in life for all of these awesome things.
