Saw this posted on thefullpint.com http://thefullpint.com/beer-news/gr...wler-talk-a-message-from-the-la-brewers-guild Looks like some LA brewers will start to fill "non-native" growlers! The Los Angeles Brewers Guild FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE A Brewers Guild Updates Statement on “Non-Native” Brewery Growler Fills Los Angeles, CA May 30, 2013 – [snipped] At a meeting of the LABG on May 15, 2013 several member breweries revealed that they have received label approval for a new format of growler label and will soon be ready to move forward with filling growlers not native to their own brewery. The guild unanimously agreed that the best course of action is for each brewery to begin these “non-native” fills at their own pace, dependent on their own label approval status, and on the infrastructure at each member’s individual establishment. In the coming weeks you can expect to see some local brewers begin these “non-native” growler fills, however there are a couple key points to keep in mind: 1) Each brewery is different and will consider non-native growler fills based on their own policies and procedures, and on their own preparedness to do so. 2) Some brewers may choose to continue filling only their own growlers at this time. Please respect this decision. 3) Call first. Before you bring a non-native growler to be filled at a brewery be sure to ask: –a) If they will fill a non-native growler –b) If they can accommodate filling the size/shape of your particular growler 4) State law requires that all identifying marks on non-native growlers be obscured before another brewery can fill that growler. ABC specifies that the method of obscuring those identifying marks cannot be “easily removed”. Again, each brewery will have their own policy in how they comply with this law, so be sure to check with them before you go to get a fill. Cheers, and happy growler filling! My growler buying hiatus shall be lifted soon!
That's surely a positive development. Thumbs up. As for those breweries that decide they don't want to get with the program, it must be nice to have to have so much business that they can continue to operate without regard for their customers' wishes.
I'd at least respect it if they just wanted to sell the majority of their branded ones before switching, but I doubt they would give that as a reason.
I can see a brewery having a few basic standards about what growlers they fill (flip-tops only, no screw tops for example) but eventually I think most places will adopt an "any growler" policy once they see that's the way the tide is going.
Discounted? Knuckle Sandwich. . .$24 fill. Smog City. . .$20+ I thought the fills at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing were high. . . . ."not" anymore. You can get your growlers (any growlers) filled at Total Wine in Arizona with whatever's on tap in the store. Come on California. . . .get your sh!te together! Same lame ass growler laws with a twist!
Discounted!??!? HAHAHAHAHHAAHA Yeah, growlers are by no means discounted at the vast majority of beers. It was pretty telling that when Patrick Rue tried to get a sort of universal growler for SoCal breweries going, that he got shot down. Too many breweries focused on making that couple of bucks on a bulky piece of glass. Such a foolish move since storing their own branded growler has to be not worth the profits that can be generated from it. Say what you will about Golden Road's beer quality. The moment word broke about being able to fill any growler there, I was sold and went over for a fill of that Big Lebowski stout. If a brewery doesn't want to accept other growlers, then I have no reason to respect them.
Wasn't too fond of the brews I tried from there, but now that I know that they fill any growler, I'm definitely planning a trip up to visit.
I like how, four months after the clarification, the situation is still much the same. Let's see which member breweries get on board here. I'm sure the usual brewery apologists will be along to explain why 33% of a year just isn't enough time to get this done.
