    Greetings Advocates,

In a couple of weeks, I'll be in La Jolla for a wedding...with a 1yr old and a 5yr old. We rented a house near Windansea for the week. My questions are:

    1) What nearby store (called packies in New England) has the best selection ?
    2) Are there kid-friendly restaurants in the area with good food/beer ?
    3) What local beers should I be looking for ?
    4) Will I be able to fulfill my Russian River desires ?

Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance !

    Pete

What's your definition of "nearby"? (5 minute drive, 10 minutes, 30 minutes?) That'll greatly influence the answers you get.

I'd say I would drive 5-10 minutes for a store and maybe up to a 1/2 hour for a restaurant or a "must hit" place in the area...? We're hoping we get the chance to hit up Stone's Bistro for instance.

Karl Strauss has a place in La Jolla. Kid friendly there as well. It's the closest place that's a compromise.

The Whole Foods in the La Jolla Village drive area usually has a solid beer selection. And if you catch the right guy at the right time in the beer section, they might go grab some Russian River out of the back for you. But, you HAVE to ask for it.

Not terribly far up the coast is Pizza Port Solana Beach. And is also kid friendly. A must for a beer geek. It's also a pretty drive up the coast.

Off the 52 freeway, out of La Jolla, you'll find Green Flash. And a bit further you'll find Alesmith, Ballast Point, and like 87 other breweries.

There is a Beverages & More on Pearl in La Jolla - that is pretty close to where he is is staying and they'll have a pretty big selection of beer. Pizza Port Ocean Beach is probably closer to where he is staying, too. The Public House in La Jolla has a nice beer selection and OK food, but I'm not sure if it is that kid friendly

Green Flash is actually up on Mira Mesa Blvd, and is nowhere near the 52. But I don't think the OP will be visiting breweries unless he has some alone time.

This is what I'm talkin' bout - Thanks !
Pizza Port sounds perfect. With a wedding, rehearsal dinner, SeaWorld, and the Zoo, a week's gonna go quick so I think brewery tours will have to wait for a return trip.

Going to the breweries is not for the tours, necessarily - they all have tasting rooms, often with choices you will never see outside of the brewery.

This is nanobrew's beer map - you might find it useful:

First I've heard of this term. Do you happen to know the background?

Short for package store...it's only place you can buy packaged alcohol. There's no beer sold here in the market (grocery stores).

Edit: Market pronounced " Mah Kit"

No alcohol sold in grocery stores?? Bizarre.
Those packies must get packed with people.

Some of our gas stations sell alcohol, as well as the obvious liquor stores.

Don't refer to these as Packies while you're in one.

Thanks for the tip - that made me chuckle in an inappropriate manner.

And they used to be closed on Sundays...
However, they never get too crowded since there's almost as many Packies as Dunkin Donuts.

Public House La Jolla, kids are welcome and they have great food for kids as well. Unbeatable beer list and burgers that top the chart. If you head 20 minutes North Check out Encinitas Ale House & Churchills
