bulk buy is where a lot of new and up and coming breweries save a lot of money. If they can't commit the buy to get the bulk discount, this is a way around it. A lot of can companies will allow a combo run (more than one beer mixed on a trailer) but even that incurs a cost. Also, some of the bigger costs in production is actually tooling. The tooling for a shrink sleeve is a shit load cheaper than for a print on a can, plus, it is easier to change a shrink sleeve artwork/date/whatever tool than having to buy new tooling every time you need to change your label. Lager companies buy/have bought enough that the can co. will absorb that cost, a lot of the smaller ones do not have that luxury.

I'm drinking a can of Lavery Brewing - Dulachan IPA right now that does this as another poster mentioned. It threw me off as well.

Green Room Brewery In Jacksonville Beach, Fl just tried canning their Pablo Beach pale ale and used blank cans with a heavy duty, moisture resistant sticker for their label. Great beer in a can too.
