Hey BA, love getting suggestions from you guys when traveling. I am going for a quick road trip leaving N Boston Sat AM to just N of New Haven CT and returning Sunday. Want to hit up a brewery each way and also a suggestion for dinner (with a good tap list) Sat night with the wife. Will prob be driving the 90 to 84 sort of route.
I did do some looking already and thinking of maybe Beer'd and Black Hog? Also, maybe Prime 16 for dinner? Just from what Ive read these get talked about a lot!
Bonus points for a good liquor store shout out too!

Happy Labor Day! Enjoy our awesome weather before we dig out of feet of snow again!

I highly recommend Beer'd as well as Grey Sail close by in Westerly RI. Bottle shops, Nikki's in Providence is great and right off I-95. High Spirits is another very good one near Nikki's, but Nikki's is my favorite.

    Beer'd - yes
Black Hog is a pretty big hike from New Haven area.
NEBCO if you get in town in time in Saturday.

black hog to prime is about 35 min unless traffic. there's one in orange too that's a few less. I'd recommend oec too since it's so close. maybe even restaurant 121 cuz that is also. middletown is also good for food and drinks. you're 15-20 from few good liq stores hartford area, eli cannon is highly rated beer bar, stubborn beauty around the corner, and krust is great for woodfire pizza, solid taps, and possibly best bourbon selection in ct if you like that on that rd. beer'd is awesome. I tried two of theirs at the craft beer 5k in new haven and they were awesome. love prime too. you can't lose either way.

I went to NEBCO last time, and to be honest, want to just try the Sea Hag or Ghandi. Looks, from what I can tell, neither are pouring. Thanks for the ideas @brblanch of Grey Sail, love Capt.'s Daughter! Looks like Beer'd is definately gonna happen. Is the tap list the same or different between the Prime 16 locations in New Haven and Orange? Is one better? Also, when going to the liquor store, is there something I should look for that I can get in CT but not MA? Thanks again BA!!

Prime has different tap lists at each location. Check out the website, it is regularly updated. Enjoy your trip !

I'd say skip out on NEBCo on Saturday since it looks like it will be a quiet week for beer (unless something gets tapped today, check the FB at about 2pm). Beer'd is a must. I'd recommend the Prime 16 in New Haven, not only because it's better, but it puts you in 2 minute walking distance to some other great stuff like Cask Republic and two bottle shops (Temple Wine & Liquor and The Wine Thief). Not an expert as to what we get here in CT that you don't get in MA besides NEBCO and Lawson's (you might find Super Sesh #2 but Sip of Sunshine will be difficult).

Thanks @BranfordBound, I hear that SoS and Ghandi are sometimes 'behind the counter'. Is it possible to walk in and ask or is that poor form?

They sell out quick so it's usually more of a timing thing. Wander around the beer section and be friendly to the beer guys. Pick up a sixer and ask someone if they have them with beer in your hand. That's your best option. Go for the bigger stores since the small places will know you're not a regular.

g bot I'm not sure what the deal is with cans. they don't seem to be circulating regularly in stores anymore. but some do put them out. held or not, not sure. but nebco has been doing can releases four 4 packs a person at the brewery. they said they are doing another but not when. I'd look out for kent falls stuff at bars. their bottles are okay but some of the less kegged ones they have some good stuff. decent chance you could see something mixed in your travels.

Any one know a high percentage place in New haven county that would get a sip drop this weekend?

You have to check out Black Hog. They're releasing cans from the Iron Heart Wet Hop collaboration at noon. The beer is dope and the cases will sell out quickly. Check out the sick video on the collab.

@Twille16 , just added Black Hog to the ride. Do you think it will still be around on Sunday?

BA, Thinking will head to Beer'd on the way down, then hit Black Hog and Firefly Hollow on the way home. Dinner will be at Eli Cannons. Just wanted to thank you all for the suggestions!

I do not get the Black Hog love. Their beers are...decent, but nothing worth traveling for. Sorry to be a contrarian or negative, but if you have enough time, I would highly recommend skipping Black Hog and going to Steady Habit instead. And geographically, it'll be way easier to get to Steady Habit than Black Hog from Beer'd.

@sgulner I'm not sure if they'll last to Sunday, but even if they don't Black Hog is worth the stop. I've traveled to breweries all over New England. If you like hardcore solid beers, Black Hog is a can't miss. It may not make the trend followers agenda to say they've been there, but to any real beer lover it shouldn't be skipped over.

@Twille16 So now we're doing bona fides? lol. You're implying I'm a "trend follower"?

I'm a real beer lover (I too have visited all the breweries in New England, yay!?) and have been to Black Hog several times and have tried every single release they put out and...I think their beer is excruciatingly mediocre. Which is a big disappointment considering Tyler's background.

But, it's okay, there's enough beer to go around for everyone with different palates.

^ would agree with the above. I would not go out of my way to get to Black Hog especially based on where you will be. As I said above, Beer'd is a must. Steady Habit is not far out of your way. NEBCO has 3 great beers (as of Friday anyway) but it will be hard to get there before they close if you are hitting Beer'd on Saturday. You could solve that by hitting Beer'd on your way home Sunday though.

I love nebco but 3 growlers of fat 10ers and sea hag is crazy talk over black hog. they don't have world class beers but they're getting better, have solid stuff, are super reasonable, and more importantly - have a lot of stuff this weekend. I tried disco 2.1 awhile back and liked it a lot. and the banh mi food truck is there today too. and I forgot to mention if you like ice cream if you do head that way, there's a farm that makes their own ice cream called ferris acres. it's a little over 15 away. closes for the yr labor day. open late til 9 or so.
