Are people that have lactose allergies affected by the lacto yeast used in a kettle sour brew?

Funny, I have never had any kind of reaction, until a couple of months ago. I drank a Lolita 750 to my head and within 30 minutes of finishing I had a crazy allergic reaction and I hadn't had anything else to eat or drink to blame it on. I have had dozens of Lolita's in my day and hundreds of other sours but never had a reaction like that. I panicked, not because of my swollen throat and face, but because the thought of developing an allergy to sours would be just about the worst thing I can imagine. Hasn't happened since.

No lacto, but I have had allergic reactions to all 4 of the New Glarus fruit beers.

I'm no doctor but Lactobacillus is named for the lactic acid they produce, which is very different from the sugar lactose.

I would say no as they are completely different but ask a doctor if you're worried or just see what happens

Lactobacillus is not a "yeast", it's a bacterial infection in beer. But no, not the same thing

i doubt the reaction came from lactobacillus but quite possibly something else in the beer. lacto is a naturally occuring bacteria in the body and is also used in making many other foods. ive had mild allergic reactions to some beer but i think its mostly due to ingredients that are plant related. im not a doctor and i didnt stay at a holiday inn last night but those are my thoughts.

I have allergies but have never had a reaction to Lactobacillus. You may be allergic to a specific yeast strain and the potency of that strain may vary with the age of the beer. I have noticed that the same substance can trigger a reaction (sneezing, coughing, exhaustion) and then a day or two later or even a couple of hours do nothing. The beer may also have a mold infection which can set me off. Because it is hit or miss and not life threatening I just live with it.

Francis T's reaction does not sound like lactose intollerance which is mainly gastric distress. Throat swelling up and what not sounds scarier and would warrant a discussion with a Dr.

Yeah, my reaction was definitely not related to Lactose. I failed to fully digest the OP's post (ha, digest). I didn't realize he was referring to Lactose intolerance, which would definitely not cause my reaction nor is it related to Lactobacillus. Just a freak encounter on my part.

It's very odd, but I drank a Cascade Blackberry with my son recently and had a very bad eruption. I'm a veteran with sours, and I'm fine with the beers, but I reacted to this beer reflexively. Sometimes I think some bugs are too much for some people.

I have had an allergic reaction to both Funkwerks saison and to the Bruery's Rueuze. Unfortunately, I am dumb enough to keep going even after the reaction starts.
