So having given up the fizzy cold stuff too many years ago, where do I start when it comes to decent lager?
Does such a thing exist outside of Germany and the former Czechoslovakia? And as I know lager covers more than the pale stuff, do I really mean pilsner?
I have had a couple of cask lagers from Hawkshead and Allendale and they tasted pretty much like a warm version of the keg fizz I left behind so another question is should I bother my arse?

Not sure about cask lager

One excellent lager that I've had from over here was William Bros' Ceilidh - might have something to do with the 90 day maturation

Don't bother. Was it the Golden Plover? I've recently sampled 'The Crisp' by Sixpoint and Mama's Yella Pils by Oscar Blues. Decidedly underwhelmed by both. Bring on The Kernel pale ales and IPA's.

I've had a couple of cask ones (Schiehallion and Inveralmond Sunshine) and both are quite nice. Not exactly mind blowing though. There's certainly room for much better ones imo. No reason they can't work on cask, as long as they are dry enough and served at proper temp. I don't really seek out lagers in the UK, we do too many ales too well :open_mouth:

The lager in Mongolia is surprisingly good. I'm sipping on a Khar Khorum right now. I was also impressed by the lager in Beijing. It wasn't flavourful but it was real clean tasting.

Most "craft" lagers I've tried have left me a bit underwhelmed really. West St Mungo is pretty nice, if you can find it. I normally just go for Budvar.

Harviestoun Schiehallion is still one of my favourites (cask is much better than keg). Sunburst is nice too but I haven't drunk enough of it to judge. I think the best British lager at the moment is coming from London: Camden Town and Fourpure.
