I wish his comment of craft beer being "much deeper" was more understood by beeradvocate users.

Not to state the obvious but how can he say anything bag about SN and NB, while they may be bigger he is certainly in the next catagory down in the size land, they are also building a brewery half way across the country. So I guess in his idea smaller local breweries could say the same thing about Lagunitas. Note I love Lagunitas products and will continue to drink them along with GI, SN, NB and any other small or big brewery that puts out a quality product.

The special releases are a drop in the bucket compared to how much 312 they sell. Flagships are the money maker for every brewery. The tiny bit of the beer geeks on this site means nothing to them

    Good for him.

Have been a fan of Lagunitas for years, and will continue to be one. Not all of their beers are great, but they're a great brewery and great people.

Regardless of what he says, I'll always be a fan of their pricing. With the exception of local beers obviously, it's between them and Sierra Nevada for the best pricing in craft brewing.

Wow. I commend him for attacking the corporate number guys but being nasty to fellow craft/independent brewers is not classy.

I think he just needs to put a middle finger on his label now. That seems about right to me.

    Cheers!

Maybe the part where he is crying about other larger craft breweries brewing IPAs and moving in on "his" turf?

They will start dropping the quality once they remove the competition.

    2 things.
#1, it's not Anheuser-Busch InBev and MillerCoors. It's Anheuser-Busch InBev, Molson Coors and SABMiller.
#2, sales are up 40% this year, he's spending millions to expand the facility in Petaluma, and tens of millions for a new facility in Chicago, creating jobs and generating tax revenue and stimulating the economy. What are the big 3 doing?

That's crying? Sierra Nevada does have much more powerful distributor partnerships. Good job though with your interpretation.

Yeah, it is pretty clear to see that he is mad they started making IPAs and was jealous of their distribution. You don't have to look very deep to see that.

Not trying to diss anyone, but there's a small group in these forums who seem to think that InBev, SAB, etc will eliminate all competition at some mythical point in the future. Ain't gonna happen guys (and gals.) Business doesn't work that way.

If that could happen, there would be only one of every retail type in the nation: one brand of gas, one brand of bread, one brand of soft drink, one brand of chips, one brand of toothpaste, etc etc. In fact, evidence points to the contrary. Small breweries continue to multiply despite the growth of the Big Beer Brands and their financial clout.

One might even suggest it was precisely the takeover of the beer market by the big brands that spurred the arrival of independent brewers who brought back the small market brewing that existed pre- and post-prohibition. Apparently there was always a market segment that preferred a variety of beer styles and responded enthusiastically when the craft beer movement arrived, or re-arrived, depending on how you look at it. In the grand panorama of beer brewing in the US, the "Adjunct Lager only" product line lasted only about 2+ decades out of the last 200 or so years.

He also chastises them for "going to the public trough" (i.e. tax abatements and such) while building their new brewery, and acts as though he's better than "those guys" because he didn't ask for any of that in the process of financing the Chicago brewery. Frankly, any company building a multi-million dollar facility would be fucking stupid not to ask for things like property tax abatements and other considerations from the city/county they plan on building in. The government wouldn't do it if it didn't benefit them in some way, so presumably they ran the numbers and decided that the tourism income (not to mention adding a couple hundred jobs) will exceed those abatements in the long term.
