I'm just curious if anybody knows for sure what yeast is used in Lagunitas Equinox. I had a bottle last night, and it had a spicy/medicinal quality that really reminded me of their Sumpin Wild. Do they use the Belgian strain in Equinox, or does all of that come from the hops?

I have one for NBS, now I'm not so curious to open it. I didn't like Sumpin Wild at all.

    Michael,

    From the Lagunitas website:

“A creamy, pale oat ale hopped up with a huge charge of Equinox and Simcoe hops for a piney, eucalyptusy, cedary, sprucey, foresty blast. UNLIMITED RELEASE”

The only solely Equinox hopped beer that I have tasted was the Sierra Nevada Equinox IPA. I picked up some cedar in that beer but zero eucalyptus.

It would appear that Lagunitas has a eucalyptus quality; maybe from the combination of Equinox and Simcoe?

Anyhow, my guess is that you are picking up this eucalyptus flavor and you ‘register’ it as medicinal.

Do you find this flavor to be appealing to your palate?

    Cheers!

Yeah- I could definitely see it being described as eucalyptusy, and I'm sure that quality came from the hops- but there was also something there that did remind me of the other beer. It's entirely possible that it's their standard yeast, but I just wanted to know for sure since it's not mentioned anywhere. The reviews also seem to assume it's all from the hops, but I'm sure you know how it is when your curiosity is piqued.

As to is it appealing? It was different, and I did get into the swing of it after a few sips. But I probably won't get it again, unless I do get in the mood for a real changeup.

I was planning on having mine for NBS too. Did you like it overall? I have found a similar underlying taste to most Lagunitas beers and always assumed it was the yeast strain.

You're right, maybe I'll dig it, maybe I won't. I'm going to slay some big beasts today though..(brews I know I dig). I might like it because I am an avid fan of the Simcoe and I really dig "Spruce/Resinous" Hop Profiles.

I had this a few days ago, didn't pick up any "spicy/medicinal" flavors at all. I thought it was piney, hoppy, and mighty delicious! Either way, at $4.50/22oz, it's worth a try.

I like that you guys plan out your NBS brews ahead of time. I'm so disorganized.

Lol, you should see my personal Schedule. It's unreal on how far in advance my thoughts ramble. Yet, I'm a chess player so I take those tactics into reality.

Yeah, it was fine. Somewhere in between a 'drain pour' and 'buy it again'. The mouthfeel was really smooth from the oats, so that's definitely a plus in its favor.

Haha that's quite a ringing endorsement. I'm sure I'll at least like it. It's a rare Lagunitas that I did not like at all.

IIRC Lagunitas uses hop extract in one or more of their beers. Perhaps that is the common underlying flavor?

I do know at least one small brewery that is totally uses only hop extract for hopping their beers and I've often thought the there was a "house flavor" to their beers that didn't seem to be related to the yeast.

I play chess also, I'm always about 3 beers ahead of what I'm drinking . I usually have high ambition for the next day but that rarely comes to fruition.

I had this a couple of nights ago and really enjoyed it. Nice "hop pop" and the oats added a creamy texture that kicked it up a notch. I'd buy it again.

I had this one last night. Solid, but the oats didn't do much other than change the mouthfeel in my opinion.

I just had one and didn't really notice much in the way of eucalyptus or medicinal notes, nor a yeasty or estery quality out of the norm for Lagunitas. If anything I found this to be right in their standard wheelhouse, lovely citrus and pine hop bomb, terrifically affordable too. Oats create a full and smooth body and there is a good deal of caramel candy sweetness. I would never think to call this a pale ale (as opposed to a DIPA).

more unctuous mouthfeel for sure. i would buy again... i thought it was a very nice drinking beer. balanced, just enough hop bite to be interesting, and a surprisingly dry finish.

    excellent little beer.
