This was my understanding since our rep discussed it with me last year.

Got the exact same email. I guess they've been getting a lot of emails about it. Haha.

I would be very interested in trying what was originally determined to be their Christmas ale and go without the 'Sucks' ale this year. Perhaps a real Christmas ale is in order and not a self-deprecating apology? After having a few bottles of the Lagunitas Sucks last year, I found it boring and washed out, much like most of their creations. Don't get me wrong, I like some brews by them, but one of the worst things a brewery can do is use the same ingredients in every beer, but mix them up in a different order to hopefully convince the nerd. It doesn't work. They have way too many beers based off of the same recipes and their 'Sucks' ale was a well-handled mistake (or hiccup) on their part. To be honest, I find most of their beers taste way too similar to each other and I hope they re-attempt their Christmas ale. I hope it's nothing like anything they've done (a different use of hops, spices and malts), and I hope it's completely unique to that of the 'Sucks' ale.

One of the best brews by them, in my opinion, is still the Hairy Eyeball. Same hops as always (typical), yet more malts (more body) and more complexity as a whole. Delish!

Sweet, more Sucks for me then! Consider me a "convinced nerd" as you put it. And man, sure seems like Sucks works for a lot of us unrefined beer drinkers.

Lagunitas tweeted a pic a couple months ago with a picture of one of their delivery trucks emblazemed with a photo of the new 32 oz bottles. Either it's a very elaborate joke, or it's safe to assume it's coming out again.

It is well known that they were talking about Brown Shugga as their "Christmas Ale" that was canceled last year. It was explained on every bottle and package of Sucks. It is back this year, and if you have not had it, it will likely not change your mind about Lagunitas. That's fine, the vast majority of us on here will continue to enjoy Lagunitas, especially Sucks when it makes it return.

So basically what you are asking is for a west coast brewery that is widely praised for their use of hops to stop doing what has made them successful and come out with something that tastes like it isn't from them at all?

damn straight! it's time these fuckers learn that they can't produce what ever the hell they want just because it's "their company" or because the masses might enjoy something new and heaven forbid they make the same beer twice when it did so good the first time around. (this is all sarcasm so please keep all hate mail to yourself!)

I certainly am not calling anyone an "unrefined beer drinker." That was not my intention whatsoever. I just find that when a brewery skimps on diverse ingredients and tends to use the same handful of ingredients, brews are bound to taste a little too similar to each other. I liked the Sucks ale. I'm just saying it would be nice to try something more divergent. But that's just me.

Nah dude, not asking for different hops necessarily. But perhaps they can experiment with different spices, such as cloves or nutmeg, etc. Or even try mashing with different grains! Just something that doesn't taste as similar to the rest of their beers.

Put spices in pies. Give me hops, barley, healthy yeast and a brewer who understands how to balance it all any day.

The bolded statement above is exactly what you asked for:
The word "and" would require that they use all three to meet your request

    What he said^

So that covers hops and spices, lets take a look at malts. Check out the malt bill for A Lil' Sumpin Sumpin and tell me that is not completely different from anything else you find out there. The fact is they use a toasted wheat that is so obscure that home brewers have to make it themselves since there is something like only 1 malter in Germany that makes it. They also make a few differ versions of this beer that while similar taste distinctly different.

The similar flavor that your are referring to is what makes Lagunitas who they are and it comes from their prodigious use of hops. If you are looking for a beer that tastes different from Lagunitas then buy a beer from a different brewery.

Now back to the original topic, give me Sucks or give me death something just as hoppy and delicious (like Holiday Leftovers )
