I actually agree with this for the most part. The Gueze and lambics I have had weren't really what I was looking for in a sour. They were very similar to a Izze sparkling fruit drinks if you have had those, over fizzy and not all that sour. Although I did just get to try Fou Foune recently and that was amazing!

I tend to fall towards oud bruin style and hit or miss in the generalized wild ale category. I like sours that are mouth puckering sour, ones that tend to make your stomach growl with the first drink they are so acidic.

Gueuze and Lambics are for girls. You're not missing a thing.

Ever drink 2-3 750s back-to-back? If so, and you had no issues, that would certainly qualify you for a couple punches on your man card.

Lambics are my favorite style, but just like any style, most of them range from poor to mediocre.

I think I'm just about done buying anything from Hanssens, Boon & Lindeman.
I'd rather pay double for Cantillon and 3F and know that I'm getting something good.

Most I have ever done is one 750 in a sitting, this sounds like a challenge in the making.

If you don't like Hanssens, you don't like lambic.

Perhaps this is heretical, but I find they taste a lot better when diluted with a high-quality witbier. They're too sweet for me on their own. Anyone else do this?

Try Lindemans Gueuze Cuvee Rene - it should be on the shelf of any decent bottle shop and believe me, you won't find it too sweet.

Lambics/Gueuze is definately a fad here stateside. 3-4 years ago I could choose between 4-5 five local stores and all would have multiple bottles of multiple types of Lambic at any time. Cantillon DF ect just weren't selling. Last week a shipment of Cantillon came to Mass and I didn't even try to get any. A store might get 6-10 bottles and they are immediately spoken for. It's out of control to be honest. Price gouging at stores. Lotteries at stores to divy up bottles. I was at my local store and asked about Cantillon and my beer guy pulled a RDG from behind the shelf and asked if I wanted it. I said no (28$ was too steep for my blood) but another customer saw that and started begging him to sell him the bottle.

There's nothing really wrong with Hanssens, but they are average as far as lambics go. There's nothing wrong with preferring things that are above average.

I disagree. They are among the best imo.

Particularly at $9+ per 12.7oz (at least). I would not be as particular about my sours if it weren't for the pricing of some of them. Yeah, Hanssens will do in a pinch but do I really want to pay that much for something like that?

If it's a fad, then won't it be ending sometime soon then? I have a hard time believing it will ever be easy again to get 'loons. I certainly hope I'm wrong.

the whole craft beer world could be described as "fad" by your definition. (maybe your are?) 3 -4 years ago everything was a hell of alot easier to get..
Craft beer has exploded, with growth off the charts every year.. when you have tons of people diving into craft beer and realizing how good beer can be there are going to be a ton of people that are going to be drawn to Lambics and gueuzes..just the nature of the beast..
