I picked up a twelver of Yuengling Lager yesterday to have some easy drinking beer around for my guests during the Super Bowl. I don’t frequently drink this beer anymore, but in the past I have enjoyed it. Ended up cracking one for old time sake and couldn’t stand it. To say the least, I’m a bit bummed to have not enjoyed a beer that I have fond memories of.

Guessing many of you have experienced something similar along the way. What beer(s) did you once enjoy but no longer have a palate for? Do you welcome the evolving palate or find yourself reminiscing on beers of old? I’m not looking to debate the merits of what quantifies ‘good’ beer, merely curious to see how many out there have experienced something similar and what that beer is to you.
    Cheers!

Arrogant Bastard. It was one of the beers that really pushed me into the American craft scene. I used to drink tons of the stuff. I wish I still enjoyed it, but now it just doesn't do it for me at all.

Just reviewed this beer, as it was the only thing we could find recently on a long trip to the middle of nowhere. Felt very much the same. Yuengling is more of a stepping stone to craft, rather than something to go back to again and again. At least at this point in my craft career.

Only for beers that are no longer made or have changed a ton. The rest I go back to from time to time, its what bars are good for, slam down a miller or miller lite. The rest I can home brew now close enough for Gov work.

I do not usually miss the AAL stuff myself. Though over the years I do enjoy a chaser for a really hot bloody Mary. I figure its 99.1% water anyway.

I found some Boston stock ale recently and I missed it badly.

    That's never happened to me.

Sure, I've had things that I don't enjoy as much as I used to. But I've never found something that I once liked to be undrinkable later on.

I used to drink Yuengling a lot in my youth as well, but now it just doesn't compare. I only drink it now when there's nothing else but Bud Light and Coors.

Pete's Wicked Ale. This got me going on craft over two decades ago but nostalgically picked some up about 4 years ago to find that it either wasn't the same as it used to be or my palate simply outgrew it. I understand that the last time I had it, the beer was already owned by a different company but you'd think the recipe would have remained the same.

Oberon. I don't hate it, but now it's one that I'll drink at a bar or a ballgame when the other choices are light rice/corn lagers.

Sam Adam's Cherry Wheat is probably the biggest one for me, when I first tried it that was the end-all be-all most incredible beer I'd ever tasted. Now it tastes like cough drops dissolved in Draino.

Also PBR used to taste very crisp and clean to me, but now unless it's cold to the point of almost being slush I can't get past the AAL taste.

I see it personally as an evolution of my palate, and the same thing has happened with bourbon/scotch/rum/gin/vodka etc etc the more I've tried and experienced. To me this is a good thing.

"Luckily" for me though I didn't really go through the phase of drinking shitty beer to get hammered, I did that with liquor instead . Not to say it never happened, but given the choice between chugging beer and chugging a fifth of gordon's vodka (shudder) I would take latter every time.

I didn't really even approach beer until I was 19-20 years old and actually wanted to find things I would enjoy rather than just pound keystone light. I sort of always had an inherent respect for beer since my father would drink AAL's only for the sake of cost, but always preferred a better "real" beer whenever possible.

Agree with the feengs on yuengling. The yuengling black and tan is slightly better but nowadays the lager just tastes like saline seltzer to me

I've also had this experience with Yuengling, and Rolling Rock. I 'grew up' on these beers, but with how drastically my palette has changed, they just don't do the same thing for me that they used to. I'll still have one occasionally and in the right context (mowing the lawn, on the beach) out of reminiscence, but an APA or IPA are usually what I'd rather have at that point.

I'll also say Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat; one of my first "craft" beers and I really enjoyed how citrusy it is, but now it just tastes watered down and artificial.

I'm not sure if this is what you meant, but it seems worth noting that neither Yuengling nor Sam Adams Boston Lager (assuming that's what you mean by "Boston stock ale") are AALs. Yuengling is an American Red Lager and Sam Adams is a Vienna Lager.

Olympia competes with PBR as the so-called "hipster" beer in my circle (despite the fact that they're both Pabst beers), and I have fond memories of going to college parties, pre-drinking age, and downing Olympia after Olympia with a lime wedge in the can. It was light, pleasant, carbonated and most importantly it allowed me to fit in.

Now all I can taste is that adjunct-lager "funk" ... you probably know what I'm talking about. It's revolting. Some folks brought Olympia to my Super Bowl party yesterday, and I had to politely decline in order to enjoy another IPA.

How ironic, I *just* had the same experience with Yuengling this past summer. Even though I can chalk it up to my palate maturing / changing, that first sip was such a disappointment...

Second would be Blue Moon. Used to think that stuff was awesome (and it still can be, depending on what it's being compared to).

I was just about to type this myself.

Used to love the stuff, but now I'm not a big fan at all. Had one a few months ago and it was not nearly as good as I remembered. Way too fruity, like drowning in a vat of crushed apricots and peaches.
