BOSTON – Yesterday, workers at two Lamplighter Brewing Co. locations in Cambridge, Mass., filed for a union election with United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1445, which represents workers in retail, grocery, food processing, and other essential industries throughout Massachusetts.

Owen Murray, bartender at the Broadway Lamplighter location, said:

“We all really enjoy working at Lamplighter, but we know that the brewery industry is changing and evolving. We want to make sure our perspectives are heard and taken into account as we all move forward together.

“From the start of this process, we’ve viewed this as an opportunity for us to have a say. I’m looking forward to the stability and predictability that comes with having a union.”

Ryan McFarland, lead bartender at the Broadway Lamplighter location, said:

“I’ve worked in this industry in different places around the country and I can say that this place is unique and special. Lamplighter means a lot to our customers and to myself as a place that cares, and we want to make sure that care is reflected in a union contract.

“With a union, we’ll have a voice on the job and the consistency we all need to thrive. That will allow us to continue to serve our customers in a welcoming, friendly environment that we strive for.”

UFCW Local 1445 President Fernando Lemus released the following statement:

“We’re thrilled to support workers from Lamplighter and look forward to welcoming them into the UFCW family and the 11,000 workers represented by UFCW Local 1445.

“Lamplighter is a well-known and respected local business that makes great beer and offers a welcoming place for the community to gather. That is made possible by the effort its staff puts in every day. We look forward to supporting these workers and working to make Lamplighter a destination for union members across the Greater Boston Area.”

Curious how common this is at other breweries?
