Hey all, I'm making a visit home at the beginning of august and wondering what's happening in the brewery scene. Last time I was home Ellison was just opened at I will definitely stop in there again. I am also planning to see what's up with Old Nation. Is the new (as in no longer michigan brewing company as of 5 or 6 years ago) MBC place downtown brewing more of their own beer? Any other spots that are really shining in the area in the last few years? I will have vehicle access but I'm not looking for detroit/grand rapids/kzoo reccomendations. Thanks

Besides Ellison and Old Nation, I'd recommend checking out Ozone's Brewhouse in Old Town. It's a (very) small place, but they make some solid beers. The Grid arcade bar is also in Old Town for a cool stop with a solid tap list. The beer at Lansing Brewing Company typically doesn't excite me, but it's a nice centrally located place with food. There's Hopcat in East Lansing for shear size of the taplist, but I prefer Crunchy's for the beer/food combo. If you haven't been home in a while, Horrock's market on the east side has a pub area, usually with a nice selection. My preferred bottle shop other than Horrock's is Vine and Brew at the Jolly/Okemos Rd intersection - they sell everything as singles. Also just south of there is Spartan Brewpub. It's nothing at all to go out of your way for, but it does exist. If you don't mind a 20 minute drive to Mason, Bad Brewing is worth the trip.

Agree with @Sparty93 about Lansing Brewing (wouldn’t recommend for the beer) Vine and brew, Bad Brewing, and Crunchy’s (would recommend).

Horrocks is actually on the west side of Lansing.

If you make it up to DeWitt, Looking Glass Brewery has been open only 6-8 weeks now but does a very good job with their beers and food. It's inside a former church building right in the middle of the downtown area.

Will be in Lansing next Monday. Wanting to grab some M43, Dank Juice, etc. I’ll only be in town for the day so won’t have time to drink, just want to pickup some bottles to mule home. Wondering if it makes sense to go to Old Nation based on my limited time schedule or just get a bottle shop or two. Thoughts?

If you just want M43 from Old Nation, you should be able to find that in most bottle shops and most Meijer stores. If you are interested in something different from Old Nation, I recommend calling them to see what they have. No need to make a special trip if they are only selling M43.

What part of Lansing will you be in?

If you’re on the west side go to Horrocks. They have a huge selection and fill growlers. If you’re on the side go to Vine and brew they should have everything you’re looking for. Most places have M 43 full earth and green stone.

I’ll be at the Lansing Center which appears to be right in the middle of the city.

The best bottle shop for you within a few miles drive would be Oades Big 10 on Clippert St. They have four taps to get growler/howler fills (you can't get a pour from the taps) and a solid bottle selection.

The best bottle shop experience is Horrock's on the west side of Lansing. Very good bottle selection and they have 50 taps available. Most are in use at all times. You can get growler/howler fills there but you can also enjoy a pint or a flight if you wish. They have a nice outdoor seating area. Last but not least, Horrock's is a really nice farmer's type market where you can find a lot of unique food items. They have something there for everyone.

Oh yeah, no Toppling Goliath in Michigan. No worries, though. Plenty of great beer to go around. Let us know how your visit goes with a quick report when you can.

Is Transient only available from the brewery or do they distribute? I think I once heard it's only available from the brewery with limited distro in the close surrounding area.....Lansing?....Horrocks?

I’ve never seen nor heard of transient distributed in the Lansing area.

Transient distributes to D. Schuler, Horrock's and Rishi's in Grand Rapids and only within the last 6 months or so. If they distribute elsewhere, I am unaware.

Cultivate Coffee and Taphouse in Ypsi gets some every once in a while. So does 8 Degrees Plato in the Detroit area.

Just left Horrock’s. Not a single can of Old Nation. Any other places on this side of town?

    I think there's a Meijer just east of there a bit...try there?

That was a pain. None at Horrocks. Impressive selection otherwise. Only two 4 packs ar Oades so went to another Big Ten store across campus for a couple more 4 packs.

At least you got some. I've been able to get most of my Old Nation fill at Meijer locations (although I haven't been to the one closest to Horrock's), which probably would've been a lot more convenient for you if you had known where the closest one was.
