As part of my attempt to clean up my stash (I hesitate to call it a cellar), I half-assed inventoried my beer.
(I missed one box in that picture, but it was mostly more BCBS)

One thing that I learned (aside from "I have a problem") is that I have every year of Sierra Nevada Bigfoot from 2010 to 2019...except 2018.

I do not believe I failed to buy it. I must believe that I drank all the ones I bought, and failed to save any.

But now I'm so damn close to a decade vertical. Shit, this has been building longer than my kids have been alive.

I have no interest in becoming a trader (maybe more accurate to say "My sense of self-preservation gives me a lot of hesitation to become a trader") -- but I want this beer, and Malt & Vine, Bottleworks, and Peaks and Pints tell me they don't have a bottle.

I live in Renton and work in Kirkland. Anyone local have a bottle they could give up? At the very least, you'd have my eternal gratitude, and a pint or two of whatever you want wherever we meet.

Try the in person trade forums. After mailing 100+ boxes in my less wise days, I now use these forums, especially when I'm traveling.

    Let me ask
I'm pretty sure one of the hobos will have one.

So, at least 2 hobos have bottles they're willing to swap out. Hit me with a Beer Mail, and we'll work out details.

Looking at your stash, I notice that my stash is kind of similar ... lots of Fremont BA beers, including B2K and B3K, Rusty Nail, KDS, etc. And Rodenbach and similar beers, as well as Bigfoot. And overall, more beer than I should reasonably have. I didn't set out to accumulate, or cellar beers for long periods, it just sort of happened.

So my question is, how long do you figure you can keep the barrel aged beers before they start to deteriorate? I'm not drinking stuff as fast as I used to. I would hate to open up a Rusty Nail or a B2000 a year or two or three from now, and find I'm sorely disappointed.

Do you think you're running that sort of risk, a risk of beer aged beyond its time?

Absolutely. I've experienced it a few times with a few beers. My good experiences with self-cellared beers have mostly been in the 2-3 year range. Older than that has been hit or miss for me.

Did you make an arrangement yet?

BTW,FWIW, I don't think Bigfoot even starts to taste like a Barleywine until 3 years. I've had it up to 25 years old, and it holds up well. also BTW, if you like to drink Barleywine, you might want to hit me up for details about our annual BW share on 2/22. You'll want to book a room in Bellingham.

I picked up a bottle yesterday from a friend of a friend. And I'm out of town on the 22nd, otherwise I'd be seriously tempted.

Thank you for the response! Truly appreciated.

First and foremost: 10 is too many. I started from the oldest and jumped to the first and stepped through in both directions by steps of 1, 2, 3, and 4 years.

2019: First taste was blindingly bitter, but I think this was accentuated by having jumped there from the 2010. Over the course of the flight, it became increasingly refreshing in comparison to the other beers.
2018: All four of us rated this last (despite the effort I went to to obtain this specific bottle). It seemed like a way-past-its-prime IPA, and not quite like a barleywine.
2015-2017: Not a huge differentiation between the three. Clearly barleywine, caramel and toffee flavors, still had a notable bitterness.
2010-2014: A lot of the bitterness seemed to have faded or been overcome by caramel and toffee. Had a generally softer or mellower characteristic the older it was.

Two of us clearly preferred 2010 to the others, the other two sort of vaguely preferred something in the 2015 neighborhood.

My wife's memories: That's a lot of beer.

Yup, four. Me and my wife, and two married friends. Tasting started after the kids went to bed after our daughter's 9th birthday party.

Having dealt with verticals of Bigfoot, repeatedly, here's my thoughts:

Yes. Going oldest-youngest is gonna be a palate shock. I love Bigfoot, but, it takes 3 years until it tastes at all like a Barleywine. Ya need to stay in order, no matter which end ya start from. But, if one must; oldest to youngest.

Finish the first one, then move on. Verticals are confusing enough to the palate, no need to complicate things by bouncing around, especially with small pours.

Cleanse thy palate! Water, crackers, water, plain cheese, water.... cleanse thy palate between rounds!

Did ya have fun? Yay! All this is about fun. Congrats!
