I received an old 80s lambic in a trade from Belgium recently. I'm told it's early 80s and does not have any label or indication of who it's made by. It has what looks to be a large floating yeast ring/chunk that also looks like a scoby from a kombucha. It's not just small yeast particles or even small chunks, it's literally the size of a portobella mushroom. Is this abnormal and has anyone seen or experienced something similar? Is it drinkable? I know nothing of these things and just got into beer in the last year.

I'm thinking it's just the yeast cake/sediment that was at the bottom of the bottle that got uplifted from shipping across country. I'd throw it in a fridge til it settles, then crack it open. Please message back on how it's tasting. Never had a lambic that old before.

It actually developed after being in the fridge for about a week. I've since taken it out for about two days now and not much has changed.

    Any thoughts?

Should be fine. I've heard of these sorts of things appearing (especially in older beers). IIRC they are just made out of dead yeast and coagulated protiens that form through multiple temperature changes.

Good to know, thanks for the reassurance.

It's just yeast, drink it without worry.

If you think it's really scary, filter the Lambic through cheese cloth when pouring.
