I got a trip in the works and was wondering what bars and shops are a must. I used to live there but it was years ago. I'm sure a lot has changed. Any help is appreciated. Cheers!

You need to rent a car to hit the good shops and bars. Khouri's is the best bottle shop around. As for bars, I strongly reccommend Aces & Ales.

^^^This. If you are staying on the strip and can't get around town, Whole Foods south of the Mandalay Bay has a nice bottle selection as well.

I was just about to come in and make this exact thread. I am staying at the Planet Hollywood on the strip.

I strongly recommend any visitors find transportation to make it off strip. Khoury's is the best bottle shop, Aces & Ales Nellis the best beer bar (Aces Tenaya has more handles but selection isn't as good and the service/kitchen isn't even comparable to Nellis), and Big Dogs / Tenaya Creek / Chicago for breweries (Joseph James does not have a pub or public tasting room).

If you are unable to leave the strip your best bet for bottles will be the Whole Foods mentioned above, and White Cross Liquor which is on the north end of the strip. You'll also have mixed success for bars visiting The Pub at Monte Carlo, Todd English Pub, and Public House.

There are also more options popping up downtown if you are able to make it that way. Atomic Liquor is my favorite, as they have a dozen or so craft handles and some interesting spirits/cocktails. Park on Fremont and Commonwealth also have a few things, but are much more hipsterish and pricey. Whatever you do, avoid Banger Brewing unless you are looking for some butter for your popcorn.

I've heard it's about $45-$60 for a cab ride to aces and ales from mid strip.

$45-60! That's just a couple of hands of blackjack? (everything is more in Vegas!)

Funny thing, last time I was in Vegas for some reason I thought I was staying at Circus Circus. So after a flight delay of almost 2 hours I finally arrive in Vegas late in the evening. After finally arriving at the hotel I finally figured out I'm not staying here, and after 15-20 minutes at the front desk. Turns out I was staying at Tropicana which was obviously at the opposite end of the strip!! Was like $40+ for taxis which should have been about $10! Oh, Vegas! Still a fun visit and made sure I made enough money to pay for $40 cab rides and $9 beers!

$45-60 sounds incredibly high, unless you are talking round trip. Most of the time I've heard its closer to $25-30 from the strip to Aces.

Exactly. I just did a little research ... I used to live at Green Valley Parkway and Warm Springs in Henderson, 9.8 miles from the Bellagio on the strip. I took a cab there once and it cost $22. Aces on Nellis is shown to be 7.1 miles from the Bellagio, so there's no way in hell that's a $60 cab ride. It should cost $30 tops to get to Aces from the strip, and if you have an honest cab driver a lot less.

    Agree with Ink'd.

From my perspective an IP trade comes with a ride as one of the extras.
