Hey folks! My wife and I are trying to plan a last minute trip to Munich for the festival. It would be our first time over there and we're completely ignorant. It will be just 2-4 of us, and from what I see online table reservations are either already booked, or unavailable due to our party size being too small. Most people say its not a big deal and if you show up at a tent by noon you can still get a table. My fear is that we won't get in a tent and I really don't want to shell out the $$$ for this trip and NOT get into a tent! What do you think? Any advice is sincerely appreciated. Prost!

Good luck with lodging, it'll be the most difficult at the last minute.

Not all tables are reserved, and a trick to keep in mind is that you can sit at a reserved table until the "reservants" show up. And if they don't show, free range!

The worst time to try getting into a tent is early evening... and raining. Rain pushes everyone inside and the tents fill to capacity fast.

Yes, when it's raining all bets are off..... That being said, I have only had trouble once (in 27 years) getting into a tent. That was in 2010 for the 200th anniversary, and the weather was so lovely everyone and their Mutter showed up for that special event.... You can always try snagging a waittress and see if they can help - with a little finders fee involved, of course ;-)... What dates are you there?

    Prosit!

Awesome. Thx guys. We're heading over 10/2 and will probably hit the festival 10/3 and who knows after that...We're probably just doing the afternoon session to make sure we can get a table - which I've heard isn't nearly as fun as the evening session but I also hear its impossible to get into a tent at night without a reservation - so I don't want to chance it. And now I'll check the weather report...wouldn't have thought to have done that! Any tent recommendation or any bars in munich? We're obviously going to the hofbrauhaus and to Augustiner Keller...any other recommendations? Thanks again!

Bear in mind 03Oct is a national holiday, so it will be busier than normal for a weeknight...

I prefer the Augustiner Braustuberl more, personally. Great food and cheap prices!! Weisses Brauhaus is A-1, and Forschungsbrau is a hidden gem. If you can't get to the Andechs Kloster itself, you can get their bier fresh at Andechs bei Dom, behind the massive Frauenkirche downtown...

    Prosit!!

    Oh, sure it is!

My favorite is the Schottenhamel tent, a bit smaller, but very traditional. On the other hand, the best spot in the world for Bratwurst is just outside the front of the Hacker-Pschorr tent -- if the little stand is still there. A long-standing tradition whenever I get to the Fest.

Best bratwurst? Nope nope nope... ;-)

That would be "Feinkost Drexler". With the main entrance behind you, go up the main street past the Ochsenbraterei Spaten tent and the Augustiner tent on your left. Take the street to the left after Aug... About 5-6 stands on the left is Drexler. I have been visiting Alex, Moni and Herbert for 11 years now. Great regular wurst, but their specialty is knoblauchwurst - garlic sausage sliced up and served on a bed of juicy kraut in which the brats simmered all day. De-fucking-licious!! Go for it, bro! Tell them David sent you... Prosit!!

We may have to have a showdown!

(It would be a dirty, thankless job -- but someone would have to do it!)

Guys, I'm more than happy to settle this brat dispute. I'll have both, twice if necessary, and I'll report back! I'm really grateful for all these awesome recommendations - thank you all so much! Dank! Prosit!

Sounds like the OP will make it and be in good hands.

Now, as to the Bratwurst, if neither of those is serving Thueringer Bratwuerste, then you're both out of your league . (There wasn't much I liked about living in Erfurt, but the Thueringer Bratwuerste are, IMO, hands-down the best in Germany)

Anger Bräu used to be really good. Back in the socialist days. There was a nice Pilsner Urquell place in the centre, too.

Have to agree about Thüringer Bratwurst. Dead good.

Never was a big Thüringer fan, then I grew up in the land of the Vienna Hot Dog!

But yes, my little stand had them all; Brats, Nuremberger Brats, Knockwurst, you name it.

I just remember seeing the stand as we went into the Hacker tent. Once we found a table spot I ran out and grabbed a brat -- one of my friends looked at me wide-eyed and said, "Where'd you get that?" I told him, "When I finish this, I'll show you -- I'm gettin' another!"

By the way, looking at the current maps of the Wiesn, my Brat-Spot is just outside the Pschorrbräu tent (now called the Bräurosl?), didn't realize Hacker and Pschorr were split in tents.

This looks like Bierman's spot: Drexler (in fact, he looks like the site-master). Does anyone know of a vendor list for the Oktoberfest?

Thanks for the clarification. I can remember seeing a few kiosks outside the regular Oktoberfest tents that carried wine and Weizenbier, but never any Czech Pils!

Saving graces during my time there were the Bratwuerste and the Haus zur Pfauen, which served Brauerei Schmitt beers from Singen.

(sorry for threadjack, OP. sounds like you're set for Oktoberfest. prost!)
