Tank 7 is one of my “steal stories.” There’s a Japanese-Thai place near me and he sells Boulevard 6 packs for $12. He only ever has Bourbon Barrel Quad and Tank 7 but I buy both. For $12?!

We spend an awful lot on beer up here, not exactly sure why it's so pricey in comparison I know it has something to do with our draconian alcohol laws though.

FWIW I mostly see this as regards out of state distributed beers. I purchase beers from Sterling Pig, Sly Fox,... and those beers are more reasonably priced (I often pay around 10 bucks for a six-pack of their beers).

I make it a point to travel to Delaware to obtain my annual purchase of a 12-pack of Sierra Nevada Celebration since that is priced much more economically (about 15 bucks plus no sales tax).

If you ever figure out this whole pricing thing please let me know whazzup here.

    Cheers!

There is a place here in Madrid that sometimes has KBS for 5 euros a bottle, which is just over half of what it goes for in these parts. This includes the espresso, Mackinac and even the occasional CBS!
Just picked up 2 each of regular, espresso and Mac.

The local grocery store had several four-packs of Ten Fidy in a discount cart once for four bones each. I bought 'em out.

Well, it is long-running discussion ( < maybe that's the wrong word, since it's seldom actually discussed, just ranted about ). I noted one other reason I was given by a local PA distributor many decades ago* in a thread a few years back:
    * I've been beer shoppin' in PA since the 1970s (living near the border in both NJ and NY), mostly for stuff I couldn't buy locally rather than for price but certain beers were once cheaper, both in-state brands like Chesterfield Ale and Horlacher Perfection - but also stuff like Ballantine Ale then out of Rhode Island and, later, Indiana.

It's not a special deal per se but I just bought some Heady and Focal 4-packs for $14 (standard price around Vermont) which is mind blowing given how superior they are compared to the $25 4-packs that "cool" breweries charge for their latest NEIPAs.

I had almost forgotten about this until this thread popped up.

Back in July of last year there was a supermarket near me where I would often shop for beer. Their selection was about what you'd expect for a supermarket -- they occasionally had things like Dogfish Head 60 and 90 Minute, you could at times find non-variant BCBS there, etc., but nothing spectacular. One day as I was searching in the cooler I noticed they had a 4-pack of Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA. I hadn't seen 120 Minute IPA there before, and it didn't have a price marker on the shelf so I decided to bring it to the cash register to see. I assumed, as is usually the case when you see a 4 pack of this beer, that this was going to be prohibitively expensive.

I was familiar with the cashier who rung me up since he was there working the cash register frequently and seemed like a nice guy. When he scanned the 120 Minute it didn't bring up anything in their system. They apparently hadn't added it yet since it was new. I told him I didn't see a price on the shelf either so I wasn't sure. Since there was a line of 2-3 people behind me, the cashier decided to estimate a price on the spot. I still remember when the words "$5.99 sound like a fair price?" came out of his mouth. My reaction was both a combination of both, "Did he really just say $5.99?" and, "Of course I'll take it for $5.99!". In hindsight it didn't really register in my head just how steep of a discount I was getting, otherwise I probably would have been more honest and let him know that this is certainly not a $5.99/4-pack beer. But I must admit that my frugality here won over my sense of morality, and it was only once I got home that the guilt seeped in. I didn't necessarily feel terribly bad for the supermarket itself -- I just didn't want the cashier to get in trouble for quoting a price that resulted in them presumably losing a good bit of money on the sale.

So that's my story of the biggest steal I've had in craft beer so far. I don't expect it will ever be surpassed, and I do have to say the bottles tasted even better knowing I paid on average less than $1.50 per 120 Minute IPA.

    Cheers BA! :beers:

Trader Joes Unibroue holiday ale - every year I buy several of the 750's - they are like $5-6 each - for a 9% excellent winter beer!

I give them as gifts and keep some to cellar every year - a GREAT value for a great beer!

I also forgot to mention that this summer I found bombers of Cantillon (Kriek and Rose de Gambrinus) for $20 and smaller bottles for $12, in a regular supermarket in downtown Lisbon. I wish I had brought a larger suitcase with me.

I've heard people say we have a flat 18% tax somehow related to the Johnstown flood that is built into the price of alcohol here, but I always assumed that was just liquor. PA doesn't like to advertise why our beer is so freaking expensive, so we may never know

I go to Delaware half the time for bulk orders (God bless the Total Wine on Naamans Road!), but yes this is definitely something I have ranted about in the past. Maybe we pay more to promote PA breweries (which is why Rolling Rock and Yuengling are so cheap here?)? Just a theory, it's definitely some nonsense PA passes on to distributors that they in return pass onto us.

The Johnstown Flood Tax (18%) does not apply to beer.

"Rolling Rock" ? Rolling Rock is an Anheuser-Busch brand and hasn't been brewed in Pennsylvania since 2006 when they bought the brand and (pre-merger) InBev sold the brewery to City.

So, wait - you claim that "PA" - the state government's Dept. of Revenue - and the Tax Foundation and The Beer Institute (below) are all lying about Pennsylvania's very low beer excise tax (only MO, WI and WY are lower), which has not been raised since 1947?

Is gasoline free in PA or DE?
Even EV's cost money to charge even if the electric bill doesn't come until the end of the month.
Or do you guys hitchhike? (Let me guess - it's easier to get picked up on the way home since you're holding cases of beer?)

I mean I am not claiming anything, just inferring there is some nonsense going on behind the scenes. Why else would prices be #1 in the country?

this was the price I used to get cantillon for at the one local spot that had it. Geuze 750s for 20, things like kriek or iris or rose for 25. There was one time when the 375s came in for 12 for geuze but since then it's been 20 for the 375s of geuze
