Not gonna do a full-on review, but the Black Tuna I have in front of me has a great aroma of pine and pineapple, and the honey seems to neutralize the roast of the black malts; it's very lightly smoky, but not malty bitter, it's hoppy bitter, akin to New Glarus Black Top, if you've had that. But the hops are way better than the NG beer, and it drinks so smooth. Kinda feel guilty about not sharing this one, my hophead friends would love what's going on here. Oh well.

Love that you compared this to Black Top as that has been my favorite Black IPA and standard for years now. Really looking forward to trying this one and seeing how it stacks up. May have to do a side by side with some Black Top since I just picked it up this weekend.

Grabbed my first bottle of Pipeworks this past weekend while in Chicago. It was a Ninja vs Unicorn but honestly it didn't taste very good at all. I'm a little suspicious that it was an older bottle. Anyone know how to figure out when it was brewed? It had a batch date of "575-576" if that helps at all.

    According to their site:

"576 / Pipeworks Ninja Vs Unicorn Double IPA / 11.29.14"

They've been making a ton of NVU. Seems like it's being distributed every other week. The place I go to never has the most recent batches on the floor. I'm just hoping that they aren't continually ordering and holding in the back until the old stuff clears out. All that said, my buddy is telling me the 599-600 batch is the best yet. I really like that beer...

I bought a NvU on December 17th, I didn't look at the brew date...big mistake considering it had a brew date of 10.11.14. Tasted totally skunked and I'm not one to be a nut job about brew dates of IPAs like some on this site can be. I'll need to try some of the new stuff batches, hopefully they don't sit as long as these other batches have.

Unfortunately we've seen this happen and we aren't happy about it at all! A small amount of stores have acted to us like they have moved through their allocation in order to seem like they can move more beer so we increase their orders... only to find out they are hiding their stock from us and then putting old beer on the shelf.

I'd love to see Derketo in a can. Hint, hint.

Stupid but true story. I tell my buddy that I had heard some place (we never been to) called Donkey, Table, Stick was serving Derketo. So I drag my friend there so we can chill at the bar and drink a good amount of the stuff. So we walk in and we are looking around thinking "where's the bar?" because the place looks like a straight up restaurant and not the ideal place to have fun getting tipsy at. A guy there walks up to us seeing our confused faces and asks if we need help. We ask if there was a bar so we could drink some Pipeworks we heard they had. He said no to having a bar but we were welcome to sit at a table and just drink. We hesitated because we had no intention of eating but I wanted some Derketo real bad so we sat anyway LOL

Black tuna was fantastic. I'm not usually a fan of black ipas, but this one is very smooth and well balanced. The roasted malts were more subtle in this than in the other black ipas I've tried, and the galaxy and honey combo probably contributed to that.

    I'll probably grab another

For those still looking, West Lakeview had black tuna last night when I rolled in (along with the other Pipeworks releases).
