Just opened a bottle of Blue Lady. All I smell and taste is diacetyl (butter). Hopefully just an off bottle but I doubt it. Too bad because I have really liked all the Pipeworks beers so far and I love Berliners, but this is not good.

couldn't figure out how to describe what that taste was until i read this post, but i've got to agree. really hope the raspberry isn't a butter bomb too.

edit: paraphrase from my beer-disliking wife: "i got some jammy flavours in there, maybe the butter is supposed to make it feel like toast"

Just opened my bottle. All I smell and taste is diacetyl as well. Never had a beer this bad before. Awful. Completely undrinkable.

Dah, I didn't make it. Went to a friend's and brought the new FFF kolsch, and drank a bunch of Busch and High Life. I'm going to try to go to Village tomorrow though. Pray tell, what good was on tap and might still be tomorrow?

Boy, what I wouldn't give to have 13 bottles of Blue Lady right now!

FYI for mcc1654 BreakingBrew & tinypyramids. Just in case you didn't see this response to my earlier post. I thought maybe it was a hop strain that I don't enjoy or an interaction with some cheese I was eating when I drank my Blue Lady. It seems you all tasted and smelled the same thing that I did.

Also, I'm trying to stir anything up here. I've enjoyed every other beer I've had from Pipeworks, and wish them nothing but success in the future.

Mine was very buttery as well with a mild blueberry flavor. Similar situation to my buddy's experience with this beer, it did get a little better as it warmed but all in all, it's a first attempt. Nothing leads me to believe Pipeworks won't nail the next one.

Though I haven't had it yet.....Is anyone else getting hints and notes of country crock? Its kinda like a off butter flavored with mild margarine qualities. I'd review it but I haven't tasted it yet, but now I know it's gonna taste like buttah.

Does diacetyl flavors disapate after a short time aging?

I think it all depends on how long you are tasting it after fermentation. By no means do I know what I am talking about though, so take that FWIW.

Ive read a little about it but what I read pertained to BA sours and not a berliner

Given time, when the yeast is done with its fermentation work, it will actually re-absorb the diacetyl from the beer. Higher temperatures accelerate this process. Once it's back in the cell, the diacetyl is converted into acetoin and subsequently into 2,3-butanediol. A by-product of each of those conversions is a compound called NAD+, which helps the cell produce energy. The end result is that the diacetyl is no longer in your beer, and the by-products of the cleanup effort have flavor thresholds so high they're not worth worrying about.
