A year and a half ago I bought a bottle of Rocket Dog and it literally exploded (unrefrigerated) on me and I figured it might have been due to the fluctuation of temperature from the air-conditioned store where I bought it to my not-so-air-conditioned house. I've heard of bottle conditioned beers doing that from time to time so I just took the loss and didn't bring it to the store or brewery's attention. Fast forward to tonight when I decided to give the beer another go: All I smell is a Brett-like funk in the aroma (a smell that I perceive as green olive like in Green Flash's Rayon Vert) and a mild hop bitterness, plus more funk in the flavor with no rye anywhere. There's also a massive four inch head that comes from the pour which I understand to sometimes be due to infection. I've read other recent reviews of the beer and, sure enough, they mostly report the same appearance, smell and taste I'm experiencing. Luckily, I like Brett, so I'll have no problem finishing it. I'm sure I've had infected beers in the past without realizing they're infected but I'm thinking this is the first one I've had where I'm actually aware of it and can identify it, true? Also, could this be why that other bottle exploded on me? Both bottles were purchased at two different Total Wines. Should I bring it to their or the brewery's attention this time?

Also, feel free to correct whatever assumptions I've made about bottle conditioning, infection etc.

I had a Rocket Dog recently and it tasted good, just how I expected, but I had a reasonably fresh Dogfather that was severely autolyzed so I've kind of been suspect of their quality control.

Well, if nothing else, this thread has taught me what autolysis is.

Laughing Dog is notorious for infected beers.

Well there ya have it. It's strange though because they don't make any wild beers to my knowledge so how does it get infected? Just poor sanitation practices?

Is it from 4/12? I bought two bottles a while back - same thing happened...gushers, sour smell, infected. I emailed the brewery and got no response, and I STILL see the same vintage on the shelves at the store where I bought them (despite telling the manager they are all potentially infected)...

I would assume so. It happened to me with both Dogfather and BA Dogfather.

The BA Dogfather I had tasted like bourbon infused green apples.

It was kind of awesome, actually.

No it was from 1/20/13. I'm just puzzled because I've bought bottles of Sneaky Pete, Huckleberry Cream, Anubis Coffee Porter and Alpha Dog, all of which have been fine. It's just this one beer I've had problems with and apparently other people have had problems with Dogfather. I wonder what it is about these two beers that make them prone to infection.
