My buddies and I are heading up to Leadville for Spring Break. I was wondering if there were any good bars, shops, or breweries not to far away?
That's a weird destination for Spring Break. I love Leadville, but mostly as a base camp in the summer to get to the big mountains around there. Anyways, there used to be an awesome burger/bar place but it closed down. There's a sweet hostel and a cool clothing shop called 'Melanzana' that I frequent. My avatar is me sporting one of their hoodies. I usually hit up the towns around it for all my beer/food needs. Buena Vista is 30 minutes south and has Eddyline Brewery and a bunch of other great places. Leadville is an awesome town but there isn't very much going on usually.
There are a couple of nice places right on Hwy 24 (main street). Mt Massive and Mt Elbert, Mt. Sherman, La Plata, Mt Huron are all in the area, plus other's. Was at Eddyline in BV last year, pretty tasty brew's (forgot their names I had, so I did not review the place or the beers). Cheers!
Why on earth are you doing this? Its too cold and snowy to go hiking, biking or camping plus Leadville has just about zero to do if you aren't using it as a jumping off point for the mtns. Are y'all staying there and going skiing or riding sleds?
Backcountry Brewing in Frisco isn't too far from Leadville...maybe 35 minutes. And, as others have mentioned, there are a few spots in Buena Vista. Also, depending on how you are getting to Leadville, you could stop in Salida at Amicas, which has pretty mediocre beer, but tasty food (at least it was tasty the last time I was there).
Ski Cooper? Love that place. No lines, cheap, and pretty obvious just by looking at this thread...nobody knows about it As for good beer...good luck - might be best to hit a liquor store or two on your way there. Leadville is pretty remote (and very beautiful, surrounded by 14'ers).
Unless they've changed it recently, Ski Cooper is freakin' tiny and pretty basic as far as difficulty. It's nice for a quick run or two, but not an all-day kind of resort from what I remember.
Fair enough. Not many lifts or runs, compared to some others in the area, but it would be enough to keep me occupied for awhile. Then again, I stick mostly to blue runs, so I could see how it could bore a more experienced skier/snowboarder.
Ski Cooper is great since its about half the price of everywhere else, and no lines! It does get boring though so we usually warm up for a day or two there then go to Breck or Copper Mt.
My buddies family has had a house up there for decades and they've kept it pretty well updated. Its a badass place to get away, and use as a base for travelling around that area. We were planning on making a few day trips, so thanks for all the suggestions. Figured there wasn't much going on up there. I keep finding a two mile brewing whenever I try to find stuff up there but it seems like they have been in the works for awhile.
