An empty bottle would weigh significantly less than a full bottle, FYI.

Crap. I waited a bunch of days to come back to this thread hoping it was resolved. Now I'm sucked back in again. I'll check back this weekend. In the meantime, post of the year:

Lots of interesting comments including Papa Goose's. But Papa goose's method (essentialy Archimedes principle) won't work too well to define the fluid level in the bottle since the glass is much denser than beer. The bottle will sink well below the fluid level in the bottle (until the weight of beer plus bottle equals the weight of water displaced). I suggested previously that the bottler was sloppy. But I didn't consider the possibility that it was sealed with a cork. I realize corks are traditionally used to stopper wine and champagne. Why seal valuable beer using expensive cork when a crown cap works so well? Answer: PRESTIGE (same as wine).

I've had one beer that was corked, capped, and foiled; a Lindeman's Framboise Fruit Lambic. No way that sucker was leaking. At least it wasn't waxed too.

Well it may be more than just prestige. I’ve never once had a carbonation or other issue with a corked and caged or corked and capped bottle, regardless of how long it’s been cellared. Certainly can’t say the same for regular capped bottles (or god forbid, cans).

I would contend, albeit without scientific backing but just anecdotal evidence, that when cellaring for prolonged periods the C&C methods are superior to regular caps.

Of course most beers aren’t intended to be cellared for long periods (or at all), so probably only “necessary” for a few select styles like lambics/gueuzes.

My experience with homebrew with crown caps is excellent. Early experience (1971) showed that excess carbonation exploded the bottle before the cap leaked. By the 80s I had improved the method so that the bottles and caps stayed intact. Recently opened 40 year old bottles revealed beer about as good as when bottled, with nice carbonation. Cans won't protect the beer as well over long term. Valuable beer packaging needs extra care -- check the bottle, especially the lip, for cracks or imperfections

No updates. Maaaaybe next weekend, but it’s going to be a game time decision. Wife, my friend, and I are going todo the Dimensions of Time set, so another stout might not be in the cards.

I will update this thread once it’s cracked though, just not sure when.

Well fuck. I would just buy you another bottle of this beer if I could, just so you could open this one and end the suspense (unfortunately I’ve never heard of Eighth State Brewing, though it’a a pretty cool name, and certainly won’t find their products here in Seattle). I’ve lost sleep over this. I just want it to end.

Believe me, the bottle is staring at me on my shelf downstairs every time I go to and from my car. Actually just looked at it again today and my conclusion is that the liquid inside is filled completely to the top to the point where you cannot hear any sound when flipping the bottle or shaking it because it’s so full. Still doesn’t explain how I don’t see a bubble pocket when shifting the bottle on to its side or upside down though.
