My wife and I are leaving from NJ tomorrow for a week long vacation in San Diego with my 2 year old daughter. Couple of questions to ask for those that are local or know the area:

    1. I plan on shipping back a few bottles that I cannot get here in the northeast to share with some buddies. What should I be able to get currently to enjoy? Any Parabola still floating around (North NJ still hasn't gotten theirs yet)? Best place to shop? I love anything BBA'd and lean towards stouts, porters and old ales. Always down for a good IPA or sour too.

    2. Are there any family friendly brewpubs where I can feel comfortable with my wife and daughter while still enjoying a nice pint or two of quality craft beer?

    3. I may be able to sneak out for one brewery tour so I am looking for the best bang. Stone seems to be out of the question based on what I have read. Lost Abbey? Ballast Point?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Any Pizza Port is fine with the little one, as is San Diego Brewing Co. If you have a car and can get to Alpine Brewing do it. You can even bring the kid and eat out there. Breweries? Ballads Point, Alesmith, Lost Abbey, Green Flash, plus many more. Throw a dart, hard to go wrong. What part of town are you staying in? There's reviews of a lot of places on my site.

Check out Best Damn Beer Shop in downtown. Great selection of beers. 1036 7th ave. I also love Alpine for their hoppy beers. Can't go wrong with any of the ones mentioned above. Cheers

Pizza ports are all very family friendly. Blind lady alehouse (not a brewpub) has much better pizza and is family friendly during the day and is not far from the zoo. San diego brewing is very kid friendly but the food is so so. Half price apps for hh are a good deal and worthwhile if you are already nearby.

Ritual tavern on 30th is kid friendly and toronado has high chairs but would be a daytime/very early dinner stop only

Olive tree market in ocean beach is a good bottle shop.

Not sure if your two year old uses a high chair, but alpine did not have any last time I checked.

I am heading out there in August with a 3 year old and was about to ask this very question, so thanks! I plan on going to Toronado right after we leave the zoo in the early afternoon. Thanks to all for the other suggestions and the OP for asking what was on my mind. I plan to bring a few bottles back as we are taking a 12 bottle wine case with us on the plane and those will be drunk after our son's bedtime at night while we sit on the patio and enjoy the ocean.

The zoo is much better in the evening, cooler, less crowded, and the animals are more active. i would plan to do Toronado around Mid-Day for lunch then go the the zoo and eat dinner at Albert's.

I attempted to do exactly as you suggested today but we were exhausted after the zoo so we skipped Albert's. Toronado was awesome in regards to their selection, food was so so. I met a fellow BA their which was awesome, I smell some future trades from east to west coast.

I also hit up the best damn beer shop this morning and dropped $130, needless to say they had some goodies albeit in a somewhat sketchy area. I am going to hit another bottle shop tomorrow (either bottlecraft or KnB) unless someone has any other suggestions. I would love to score some parabola if available and am willing to drive an hour or so to get it. Also on the agenda tomorrow is Pizza Port for lunch so that should be good. Thank again for all of the input.

I think Palm Springs Liquor is my new favorite SD bottle shop. Tiny place but wall to wall insane selection, even "craft soda".

KnB is a very nice store but there is not really anything nearby that is worth seeing. Bottlecraft is in Little Italy so you could walk around a bit as well. If you are in Little Italy, Pete's Quality Meats has excellent hot sandwiches.

If in Mission Beach your closest stop will be Pizza Port in Ocean Beach, as said above: family friendly.

Olive Tree Market also has a bottle shop and is located some blocks away, their tasting room is open in the afternoon/evenings thurs-sat.

Blind Lady Alehouse (also a brewpub, Lee just rarely brews there) is likewise family friendly.

Children are welcome out at Alpine, and if you have a car it's worth the drive for BBQ and beer. Plus, their bottles can almost only be found at the brewery. A drive out to Julian could also be something you're interested in.

Ballast Point/Homebrew Mart is located just east of 5 and north of 8, closest brewery to Mission Beach.

You might also be interested in Monkey Paw, not too far from the Zoo and it's a brewpub.

SHHHH. Don't let the cat out of the bag! hahaha. But for real, that place is off the hook. Owners are real nice too. It's funny, most of the people that go in there I see walking out with either their 30 pack of fizzy yellow, or a 40oz...they don't even know what they're missing.

exactly what I was going to recommend. Plus if you buy any tasters in the tasting room you get 10% off your beer and wine purchase (just show your receipt).

As for Parabola, check some of the random liquor stores in OB, they might still have some, though even those places seem to be going quick. If you are heading into OB let me know and I can send you a list of places to try, I have not been in them in a while so they may be out.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, what does OB stand for? My wife has a seminar everyday until 1 pm so I am more than willing to take a hike outside of the 'local' spots. Thanks again for everyone's help.

I wasn't going to mention that to imply any correlation, but yes not a shocker. My buddy lives across the street i the Palm Spring apartments which aren't too bad. That 7-11 that is currently shutdown has been held up or vandalized more times than I can remember. Part of me is happy I live a safe distance from the selection of beer they have. I'd be over there everyday. If there was any place I'd wanna make friends with for access to stuff before it hits the shelves, it would be there I think.

So I stopped by two bottle shops today, KnB and Palm Springs, and both were impressive. I went to both relatively early in the day so they were quiet and I was able to take my time. FWIW I thought that both were as good, if not better than the best damn beer shop.

Later in the afternoon I took my wife and daughter to Pizza Port in OB and thought it was fantastic. I would highly recommend it to any visitors with kids as it has plenty of space for the kids to roam around and the service was great. Tomorrow I plan on hitting one more bottle shop and possibly Stone for a quick visit among other things.

On a side note I have never shipped beer before but have read multiple threads on how to etc. My question for the San Diego folk is do you have a preferable store that you use to ship out of? I would hate to have spent $400 on bottles just to have the boxes confiscated etc. Thanks again guys!

I ship out of the FedEx/Kinkos in OB/Point Loma (off of Midway). I use the styro boxes, I have never had an issue. I do pack a little bit of noise makers. I also print and attach labels ahead of time so that I don't have to talk to anyone, i just drop of the box and give the thumbs up.

Are you checking bags? do you have room for beer? Even if you are not planning on checking bags I would recommend doing it for your beer (at least the "first bag" for each person, which is typically $20). It is not illegal, and you will have it immediately, plus it can be cheaper. 12 Bruery beers cost about $40 to ship. I am guessing I could fit about 15 in a check bag and it would cost $20.
