Since I recently ran out of homebrew, I was forced to purchase beer. I picked up some Stone Delicious IPA and have been enjoying it even though it doesn't really drink like an IPA.

It uses Lemon Drop and El Dorado for flavor and aroma. Bittered with Nugget. It has a lot of lemon and some tart cherry from the hops. It drinks like a dry soda with a medium bitter finish. Very different, especially for Stone. The 7.7% abv is only noticeable in my legs.

Anyone here have brewing experience with either hop? If so, how much did you use and when did you add them? End results?

I made an El Dorado IPA. It is not over the top citrus but had some other fruits in there. El Dorado additions at 20, flameout, and dry hop. Horizon as a bittering hop. Nate Smith talks about this hop during his NHC presentation (along with a bunch of other new hops): http://chopandbrew.com/episodes/chop-brew-episode-32-brewing-with-new-hop-varieties/
He suggests using it for single hop pale ales and IPAs and dark beers (slide 45 here if you don't have patience to listen: http://destroy.net/brewing/hops-2014.pdf) but thinks it can easily get lost in a citrusy IPA.

With 18th Anniversary and now Delicious IPA, I think Stone has this hop really nailed down. A very unique hop that is best used mostly on its own. I get like a lychee, melon, orange/lemon Starburst kinda aroma from it.

Seeing how StoneBrewingCo LIKED the OP ... maybe it's time they make-a-move ... take it to the next level ... and dish.
Not as if it would be the 1st time they tipped their hand to home brewers.

I've used El Dorado quite a bit, and Lemon Drop once. Not used them together. I really enjoy El Dorado...usually seem to get sweet citrus flavors/aromas from it. I haven't used Lemon Drop enough to form an opinion, but I'm a big fan of the way it came out in my most recent IPA.

Going to be brewing an Am. wheat with El Dorado, Amarillo or Armadillo, and Cascade this weekend.

Looking forward to kegging an El Dorado single hop IPA this weekend I'm super excited about Nuggetzilla hops...got a single hop IPA of Nuggetzilla with Conan yeast that is burping all kinds of pineapple aromas out of the primary right now!

I've got both El dorado and Lemon drop hops going into my next ipa, but going with hop extract for my bittering. Any suggestions on when to use these hops? I was planing on LD at 10 or 5 min, then the ED at flame out whirlpool and the dry hop?

I prefer El Dorado late, so it sounds good to me. I'd consider adding some at 5min...but that's up to you. In my Brett IPA, I used Lemon Drop at 2 oz after 15 min, 1 oz at FO, and 1 oz DH, pretty happy with the flavors imparted.

Not trying to clone the Stone beer, so I'll add Calypso. I think I'm going to do Lemon drop at 15, El Dorado at 10 and Calypso at 5. Then chill to 160 and steep an ounce of each. Shooting for a tart hop beer. Probably use wy1098, acid malt and special roast for extra tartness. Dry hop with El Dorado and Calypso.

It won't happen until it gets above 45F outside which doesn't appear to be happening anytime soon. :slight_frown:

I have bunch of the weird hops from Yakima Valley. Brewed an IPA with Nuggetzilla, Azacca and Lemon Drop. Came out pretty well. Need to do single hop beers to get a true reading on them all. The Azacca/Lemon Drop has a lot of lemony/citrusy flavor and aroma for sure..

El Dorado hops has a dedicated website.

    http://eldoradohops.com/brewers.html

    According to the breeder/grower:

El Dorado hops consistently elicit responses of fruity notes, specifically tropical fruit flavors. Other fruit notes
offered have been pear, watermelon candy and stone fruit.

I have an issue with their vague descriptors. Tropical fruit? What kind? There are many tropical fruits and they don't all taste the same. The same can be said for candy and stone fruit.

Morebeer basically calls it a cherry hop and that is what I picked up from Stone's Delicious IPA. It was 60% lemon 30% cherry and 10% spice.

I've never used it by itself...and mostly used it with citrus-y hops. This is probably why I get sweet citrus (like candied orange peel) when using it. It has a very distinct aroma...that reminds me a lot of Fruit Punch.

I have never gotten pear or stone fruit from it.

Has anyone tried this beer? If so, what did you think of it? If not, you could tick a lot worse new beers.

I bought it again. Second impressions are when a new beer walks on thin ice with me and regardless of the first and likely inflated impression, the beer still has something to prove.

I still like this beer. It isn't bitter enough to be an IPA. I'll call it an Imperial Pale Ale.

It's a fairly unique beer. How many widely distributed beers can make the same claim using only malt, hops, water and yeast? Not many.

I liked it and pretty much agree with the flavors being lemon then cherry candy like, and the bitterness is a bit muted or maybe smooth is a better term. I can see were a pale ale might be a better cat that this beer fits, but either way I enjoued and would buy it again.

I'm going to use those hops in my next ipa, and i've been going back and fourth about whether or not to use another hop. I'd like it to be more like an ipa, so I was thinking of adding some citra hops at FO and in the whirlpool?

I'm dead set on using Lemon Drop, El Dorado and Calypso. 4oz each. 8 in the kettle and 4 in the dry hopper.

El Dorado smells like Jolly Ranchers to me. i don't want to go too heavy handed with it for fear of a synthetic or candy-esque beer. i've used it once (in a APA, i think) and it was nice. think i used it with Galaxy.

So the El Dorado kicked the Nuggetzilla's ass! The El Dorado has an incredibly nice flavor/aroma of stone fruit with hints of white grapes/gooseberries...a little similar to Nelson in that aspect. I can see the Jolly Rancher flavor and aroma, but it doesnt jump out at me like the other flavors do, its more subtle and a component of the bigger overall flavor. Very good single hop IPA that I will definitely brew up again here soon. I used Yakima Valley El Dorado and my hop schedule was 1 oz (60), 2 oz (15), 2oz (flameout for a 15 minute hopstand) & 2 oz (DH)
