    Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout

Stout brewed with coffee and aged in maple syrup whiskey barrels

Perhaps one of the most desired and anticipated beers of the last 10 years, one that people have not stopped talking about since its original release, is coming back.

I'm not here to break that news though, that news is old. I want to talk about just how good this beer actually is, and maybe more importantly how different it actually is. I have no doubt that this beer is delicious, but will it be worth the lengths most of us will have to go to get a taste of it?

There are a couple kegs being tapped in my area, and I'm guessing people will line up at least a couple hours ahead of time for it. I think an keg probably has about 80 "10 oz" pours in it, so less than 100 people will actually get any.

There are tons of great barrel aged beers out there, and personally I don't even think KBS is one of the best, but even if it is, what is it about the maple that could really make this beer such a must-have experience?

People that have had CBS before: is it worth it? What are your thoughts on this beer compared to other barrel aged stouts?
People that have never had CBS: what are you willing to endure to taste it, and why (or why not)?

Personally, I am on the fence. One place getting a keg is 5 minutes from where I work, the date has been posted and the time will come soon, so I think that if i want some I could probably get it, but I just keep imagining myself leaving work early, waiting in line and stressing about how many other people are there, finally getting a pour and saying "yeah, that's pretty good, but its just a beer".

I had a couple of pours from the original draft only release. I thought it was a pretty damn good stout, Founder's makes it after all. I have to say though that I have the subsequent hype surrounding this beer puzzling. Plenty of beer out there as good or better.

From the title, I thought this was going to be about the television network Columbia Broadcasting System.

I've never had Canadian Breakfast Stout, but I have had friends who have raved about it. Personally, if I can taste it, great. However, Founders doesn't distribute in my area, so my chances of purchasing a bottle at a store or a pour from draft are slim to none. I'm not hurt though; there are lots of others beers around to drink which don't require queuing in line and waiting a length in time which you could down a pint or two.

Its a really good beer and I have enjoyed it the times I've had it. That said I'm not showing up 2 hours early at any bar for a pour of it. If I get some this round then awesome, if not there will be some other hyped beer available in the near future, or I can just go down the street to Schlafly and enjoy some equally well made brew.

Am I willing to take off a half day of work to line up for one 4 oz pour on a Monday at ChurchKey? Not for any beer.

Had a bottle of it almost two years ago. At the time, there certainly was hype surrounding the release, but nowhere to the extent that I'm noticing this time. Of course, a lot has changed in two years, particularly the interest in craft beer.

In short: Did I enjoy CBS the first time around? Absolutely! I thought it was one of the best beers I'd ever tried in 15 years of drinking.

Would I get it again? Are you kidding me?!? Have you noticed the insanity? No way.

    There you have it.

Here's my honest portion of the conversation: hot damn I want to try this beer! I say that as someone who was impressed with, but far from overwhelmed by, KBS. CBS just sounds like such an intriguing, awesome beer. I'd definitely brave the lines and the wait, if I had the chance, to try it out once - just as I would for PtY.

I can only assume you are referring to the 2011 bottling of CBS but that is not the only time this beer has been released.

@beernuts Who are you kidding? Just the mere fact that you're starting this thread is proof enough that you're going to be one of the first people in line for this. You're just seeking validation, which is fine. As to whether or not you'll love it, it's the same three words you've seen on this site time and time again:
    TASTE
    IS
    SUBJECTIVE
...just go ahead, get in line and report back afterwards.

If you're five minutes away, why would you not try to get some? Founders' barrel aged beers are the shit.

posted this in what beer are you drinking earlier today:

found some cbs 14 on tap and had 2 5oz pours, not quite as good as what I had it built up to in my head but it was very good.

that and some cheese and crackers were lunch today, much better than lunch most days but not as great as I had thought it might be. That being said I'm glad I made the effort to try it. I know I would have wondered just what I had missed if I hadn't taken the time to seek some out.

I got to my local bar about an hour and 15 minutes early, grabbed the last open table, and settled in with a beer and a sandwich until the release. Did some busy work (grading) while waiting for my girlfriend to arrive. What is not to like? There are easy ways to make these events painless.

Was a tiny 4oz pour in a small whisky glass, but I am glad I got the chance to try it. Extremely well balanced beer.

I've come to accept that NO beer could live up to some of the ridiculous hype that's out there:wink:

I've had KBS and Founders Breakfast Stout, love 'em both. What would I be willing to do to try CBS? I'd be willing to walk into a bottle shop, pick up a bottle or four pack, walk to the register, and pay for it (price has a limit). I would not be willing to wait in line and wait more than 10-15 minutes for any beer. I just don't think any beer is really worth the time if it's too much to get it, life's short, I like a good beer, but I think many other things as more important than beer.

I'm sure I will try I just don't know how hard I will try. It being tapped at a Whole Foods with about 6 bar seats and 3 tables, so its not exactly a bar. If I could grab a seat early like @Mr_Abner suggested, I could chill for a while, drink a beer and wait. But if all the seats are gone it would be awkward to wait.

Really though I was just thinking about the whole phenomenon of this beer, and a few others like it. A beer is released and is very well received, but the release is a one time thing. The beer goes away and people continue to talk about it, and it eventually gets built into this mythological thing. When it finally returns, everybody has to have it, and I think all of the talk over the years creates this expectation that the beer will have this almost magical element that sets it apart from all other beers. This beer now offers a beer drinking experience that cannot be attained anywhere else. And I think for most craft beer lovers, whether they realize it or not, that is the holy grail. But I don't know if that holy grail beer exists. I know I search for it, but I think most beers out there are variations on the same theme, some more well done than others. In the rare instance that I do taste something truly unique, its almost always by surprise and not where I thought it would be.

It's crazy to think that one of the places here getting such a hyped beer is a damn grocery store! Whether it's worth the hype or not, it's definitely a good time to be a beer geek.

Went to PTY event 3 years ago. Had the day off, went down about the time the bar opened. No lines, walked in got my pour and it was good. The next year I left before even attempting as the line was huge. PTY was very good but not worth waiting in line for. I would do the same for CBS. If I could walk in or wait a few minutes I would go , much longer than that and I leave.

    Enjoy
