Chris, this is the first time I became aware of Dupont Monk’s Stout.

“A perfect summer beer.”—Brewed for Thought

Monk’s Stout is a recreation of a beer brewed by Dupont originally in the 1950’s. Reintroduced to the collection in 2011, it is the first true Belgian interpretation of a Stout—not a recreation of a style. Unlike more traditional stouts that are characterized by gentler malt flavors or sweet lactose notes, this black beer is defined by its dry and bitter taste. The use of roasted malts imparts a strong taste of coffee and chocolate, and the aroma of hops remains noticeable. It is light on the tongue—like strong iced espresso—and finishes with deep roasted malt that is both bracing and refreshing. Dark, dry and quenching, Monk’s Stout is sure to become a classic.”

FWIW the above description does not particularly ‘ring my bell’ but it certainly reads like an interesting beer.

    Cheers!

I had it once on draught and I did not like it at all. It was so unpleasant that I suspected that the drink in my glass was a poor representation of this beer - I'd be happy to take my chances and try a fresh bottle if given the opportunity. Don't know if they still make it.

Isn't a Schwarzbier sometimes described as a black pilsner? I'm sure this one is hoppier, but the term already exists.

The intersection of 'sour' farmhouse ales and IPAs is already happening with dry-hopped saisions and the like. I recently had Anchorage Mosaic Saison and it was fantastic. De Garde is also putting out dry-hopped versions of Petit Desay.

What I would like to see is a coffee cream ale or porter aged in Blue Jamaican barrels.

The Dupont website indicates this beer is still being produced: http://www.brasserie-dupont.com/dupont/en/tableaupres.html

I homebrew Saisons regularly and it just seems to me that a Saison yeast strain would not complement a Stout grain bill (roasted malts) but I really won't know unless I try one I suppose. If I ever see this beer on draft I might try it. I would not be willing to buy a bottle of this beer.

    Cheers!

I like where you went with this, but I was thinking a Canadian imperial stout... Maybe something to be had cold in the summer... Just cause I enjoy stouts to IPA styles...

Hawaiian Wild Ale. A local brewery, Beer Lab HI, is opening today. They will be brewing beers with 100% local bretts.

Michael, to my mind a necessary characteristic of a Schwarzbier is a noticeable roast character. SBC Pils Noir does not have a roast character for my palate. IMO this beer is properly labeled as being a Black Pilsner (or using the French word Noir).

I also have a recollection of drinking a Victory Black Pilsner on draft which I enjoyed drinking. I tried finding a reference to this beer via a web search but I was not successful.

Jim (@Starkbier), can you help me out wrt Victory Black Pilsner? Did Victory make this beer?

    Cheers!

Edit: On BA Pils Noir is classified as being a Euro Dark Lager.

Watch craft breweries make "Macro style lagers". They'd essentially be like $16 Bud knock-offs. And the sad thing is that I know far too many people on this site would eat that up.

The Japanese are already doing God's work in the small batch whiskey department. I think it's just a matter of time before craft goes even bigger in the land of the rising sun (there's already some notables).

Soy BA Ninja Sour! Yeah, baby!

'Black' versions of existing styles (i.e. with roasted malts). We've seen it with Black IPAs, and there have been a bunch of dark sours and saisons popping up in recent years. Hell, two nights ago I had a black gose from Transmitter and it was fantastic!

Also the Imperial Brown Ale. Some beers like Palo Santo Marron and CC Bolita Double Brown Ale have started to propel this idea, and although many of these beers could easily be called barleywines or strong ales I think it's a style we're going to see more of.

It won't happen, but I'd love to see an eis-quadrupel.

Well, not so much "see" as "taste".
