Folks, Have seen the Sail and Anchor presence taking over more shelf space in Danno's. Jack Tar was solid, the IPA was really good one bottle, less so the next (and needs the fridge methinks) which brings us to their Barleywine, Changing Tides. Has anyone had it and any thoughts as to whether it is worth buying a few for the cellar? a la the JS one a few years back? (btw price varies between 16 and 19 as well week to week) cheers
Hadn't been into a Dan's for probably 6 months and saw the IPA and picked up that and the Barleywine. Good pricing, paid $15 for the Barleywine. Haven't had it yet, will do in the new year. Found the IPA to be ok, Jack Tar too. As much as i don't love the market dominance that WES and WOW have, it is good to see some bigger styles being done without the obscene prices. As for whether to buy a few to cellar? It's normally a good style. If you like the style, it could work. Depends if you see value in that vs cellaring something like Curmudgeon or Old Stock
Where are they brewing? Ratebeer seems to indicate they brew the core range at Feral (embarrassment to them if that is the case) and the specials at Gage Roads.
Nothing in principle against trying the barleywine but in looking at the reviews now they aren't great so doesn't seem worth it to me. I did buy a bottle of Jack Tar due to the reasonable reviews but tbh I'm yet to drink it (lol).
the barley wine is pretty nice, had on tap at sail and wanker, overe here its $20 and comes in a metal box? personally I woudl think the box probably cosnt more than the beer, which is a waste I am glad they are making bigger beers,
When I was at the Sail (the pub), the pub 'core range', the IPA and the Brass Monkey Stout, were brewed at Feral. That might be where the confusion comes from.
I have tried the new S&A longnecks out of curiosity and supporting the locals, its nice that they are having a good crack at the styles. I thought the Devil Dodger was a pretty solid effort, I had it with a mate along with a SN Hop Harvest, and it wasn't disgraced. The Jack Tar is ok for the style, its no Old Rasputin, but it was closer than I was expecting. Have not tried the barleywine. I am happy to see Aussie breweries try different beers, and they can count on my patronage if they continue.
Sounds like a waste of money if it is: "...Confused and unintegrated. A mediocre Barleywine. ....A drinkable beer but barely..."
