I believe he's referring to where the overall average score now only includes reviews, rather than every tick.

Then its back where it once was, because it used to be reviews only and there were no ticks.

They then allowed ticks to count for a while, thinking the two samples were pretty much from the same population. They then found the two populations really were not identical and went back to reviews only.

Doesn't the overall rating only count 250 character reviews now, or did they change it again?

Yes that's correct. Currently only 250 characters required for the review to count.

I feel bad for the people that have never drank a perfect 5. There is so much amazing beer in this world and if you review enough beer and refuse to give some great a great score than you are probably just tying to hard to knock the score down. Drink more and truly enjoy the great beers more. I'm glad I've got numerous perfect 5s in my cellar. Cheers!

When I give a five, its usually a beer I thoroughly enjoyed that I would not change a thing. When I drink a Bourbon County, Parabola, Permanent Funeral, Pipeworks fish series, Sue, ect... I appreciate each beers uniqueness and don't necessarily grade which one is better than the other, My taste differs one day to the next, when I want a Hopslam, I know I'm gonna love it, on an other day, maybe not so much.

Perfection is hard (if not impossible) to attain. I have scored 5's in individual categories (taste, feel, etc.) before but never an overall 5. Weihenstephaner Hefe closest at 4.89

I given many 5s. In order for me to do so when i take my first drink of a new beer and i say holy shit! Thats a good start. Then after that taste its all about drinkability for me and to not get slammed off two amd the taste is consistent as drinking. A few of my 5s....

    Ommegang Rosetta
Carton 077XX (the hype truly is real, it IS that good)
Two Roads Pils and Two Roads Saison
    Yards Brawler (bumped it recently)
Weyerbacher Merry Monks (the exception to not getting drunk quick)

And to be honest im not easily impressed so i truly think these beers are that good.

I think you are missing the point. Presuming that giving a score less than 5 means "you take beer so seriously that you're looking for flaws in something that tastes amazing and philosophically can't possibly fathom a perfect score" is just making up crap. You taste something amazing and give it a 5. I taste something amazing and give it a 4.75. Zero difference in seriousness. Zero difference in fun. Zero difference in anything except a score that's given.
Bottom line, discussion and disagreement are the heart and soul of online forums, but it's the trend to indulge in character assassination in anonymous postings that I don't like and the only reason I responded to your original post.

To quote your own post that I recently saw in another thread..."Such an easy place to troll while you sit in front of a computer."
Not sure why you would post that (which I totally agree with), but on this thread feel the need to assign negative characteristics and motives to a bunch of people you never met. After 25 years of drinking craft beer and homebrewing, the one thing I have learned is that there may be even better beers out there. I took three trips to Belgium last year and during each one sampled new lambics that were better than my previous conceptions of best-in-style. I promise you that I don't need to drink more and that I already truly enjoy the beers I'm drinking. Scoring something by .25 or .5 less than another person is irrelevant in the scheme of things and does not translate to "trying hard to knock the score down" or less enjoyment.

Will give 5's only if ive had that beer at least 3 times. Examples so far; Mornin Delight, KBBS. After having them then trying others from across the country i decided giving a 5 was warranted.

On the other hand i wont lower a score unless ive had the beer multiple times. I rarely give 5's as it is and used to think it shouldnt be done. Now i believe its fine if you have compared enough beer. Plus, nothing is set in stone. You can alway edit!

No beer can be perfect. There is always room for improvement, however small it may be.

My highest rated beer is JW Lees Harvest Ale at 4.91

While I agree that nothing is ever really perfect, to me a 5 is an indication of awesome deliciousness. I mean, everyone has their personal favorites, and to me, your favorites are the 5's. To each their own though.

There are beers I have rated very highly that I would consider perfect, for me. But when it comes to rating I try to be a little critical of even the beers I love. Thus, I have not handed down a perfect 5. I hope someday I taste a beer that warrants 5s across the board!

For me, a beer is a 5 if first and foremost it is absolutely delicious to me, and seems to be in a level above and beyond most any beer I've had (all styles). Also for all the other rating attributes (appearance, smell, feel etc.) they are amongst the best of each of those criteria within the style I'm rating. I have several 5's that represent the best beers I've ever had. Some may get knocked down after future samplings and others may move into the "best" rating group. 5's represent a group/tier to me anyway. Everyone can rate however they wish of course. I try to follow the Bros. guidelines the best I can.
