I am a fan as well. I was surprised by the MS/LA beer scene. Pretty decent actually.

I live maybe 50 miles from the brewery. I need to take a tour.

I had Prost's dunkel, and now I must try this. Maybe soon, but not now... not now... *cue inspirational music

I know this doesn't really help... Had to buy a bunch of beer for a party Saturday. The guests were mostly craft newbies.

I purchased three 12 packs of Genesee Bock beer at $7.99 each. Was a total hit.

So there's a great value for a regular bock.

We had two Einbeckers on draft at the Liederkranz recently, one of which was the Winter and was pretty nice.

    My best Doppelbock experience has been precisely Salvator on tap back in the day, which i used to have at Paulaner Bierhaus in San Sebastián. A woody deliciousness...Later servings from the bottle have not been near those steins, so in my experience you are maybe on to something. Anyway I guess Doppelbocks are much better when fresh and would recommend you to look for a good old Salvator on tap, and see what´s going on. This was the place;

But back on topic my favourite ones would be Ayinger Celebrator and Paulaner Salvator (the good one) on top, with the Weltenburger Asam Bock making a third.

Then a second group with Optimator, Triumphator, Korbinian...

My wish list includes the ones from Andechs, Aecht Schlenkerla and the Augustiner Maximator, which i am pretty sure are all excellent!

As much as you look, I doubt that you will find one better than celebrator..

Schlenkerla ships to anywhere in the EU via their website, but you'll have to wait until about December 1st to order the Dopplebock.

I also think Celebrator is the finest. Too long since the last but i have one in the fridge. Maybe tonight?

I know they ship but never bought beer online yet, and now that you mention i can´t think of a better way to begin than Schlenkerla. Only had the Marzen and really want to taste the Urbock, the Hell...and now the Doppelbock, in December!

I will take a look on their site. Danke!

    Gerne!

One "tradition" I made for myself while living in Germany, I'd order a case of the Urbock when it was released in October followed by a case of Dopplebock in December. Those were very good times!

Personally, I think the doppelbocks from Andechs, Weihenstephaner (Korbinian),Ayinger (Celebrator), and Weltenburger are all great and probably of equal quality. I prefer the Andechs one, but the others are just as good in their own ways.
Of the bigger guys - Optimator is damn good, too.

All great, equal quality, and surprisingly different in their own "personalities."

My first experience was Spaten Optimator on tap in San Antonio. Way good and much better than in the bottle. Locally Duck Rabbit makes a very good one, Duck Rabbator.
