Agreed. I find Scrimshaw to be one of the most refreshing brews for an incredibly reasonable price. It's a bit on the sweet side, but it's a nice change when I'm not in the mood to assault my palate with hops. I also have found it to be the perfect beer to open the eyes of craft beer skeptics who are used to drinking Miller Lite or the like.

When I'm in the mood for something slightly more hoppy (relatively speaking), I'll grab a Troeg's Sushine Pils or Victory Prima Pils.

if you ever travel germany try the pilseners from the northern part of the country. they are more hoppy then pilseners from south germany or the czech republic.

Its kind of funny with me, because while I do enjoy some of Dogfishhead's flagship stuff from time to time (120 IPA, Worldwide Stout), my favorite offering from them is their Imperial Pils (My Antonia). Reverb Pilsner from Boulevard is also a winner in my book (I tend to like the stronger abv's). Victory Prima Pils is also very enjoyable to me.

I haven't really dabbled much in the European offerings (I have tried a few of the major brands, of course), but I am really excited to be traveling to Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic in May to sample boat loads of this fine style! I will be on the look out for some of the aforementioned brews listed above.

Over here in Germany we consider those breweries "Fernsehbier" which is our equivalent to your BMC.

I absolutely agree. Pilsners for some reason are the most under appreciated and under represented styles in the craft beer industry. I am sure part of the reason is that you have to age a pilsner for double the amount of time than for an ale. Still one of my favorite styles, I really miss the Czechmate Pils and the Rockbrau pils that used to be brewed by Rock Bottom in Massachusetts.

I know that Kulmbacher EKU Pils gets so so ratings around here, but I used to drink that one fresh and not so fresh; alsways very good to me. Also, is Trumer still kicking? That was a good beer and concept.
Good to hear, but it doesn't make it to my neck of the woods. It might behoove the Trumer folks to consider finding a good North Carolina distributor. Good German and German-style beers do well in a number of N.C. markets.

As for German pilsner, it begins and ends at the gates of the Brauerei Kneitinger in Regensburg.[/quote]

This is possibly one of the most true statements ever. Just returned from a trip to Germany, Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic, and the pils at Brauerei Kneitinger was probably the best german pils that we tried on the trip.

As for Pilsner Urquell, this is probably the best beer in the world when fresh...hands down.

Sly Fox makes a tasty Bohemian Pilsner called Charles Bridge Pilsner. It is periodically on draft at the Sly Fox Brewpub (and I would guess the Tasting Room as well).

I am guessing you mean the Pilsner from Pivovar Kout na Šumavě (the brewery is in the western Czech Republic very near the German border)?

There was an episode of Anthony Bourdain No Reservations where he went to Prague. He made a side trip to Pivovar Kout na Šumavě with Evan Rail (a noted beer writer who lives in the Czech Republic). Evan Rail stated this brewery has the “best pale lagers in the country if not the world”.

Do you happen to know who the importer to the US is for Pivovar Kout na Šumavě?

    Cheers!

I did a quick web search of Shelton Brothers and it turns out they are the importers of that beer. Below is from the Shelton Brothers website:

    Koutska 12

Pivovar Kout na Šumavě • Czech Republic

Kout na Sumavé, a small town in the Bohemian Forest near the German border, was a prosperous center for beer production until it’s local brewery was shut down in 1969. a local businessman bought the brewery building in 2003, took two years to clean and renovate it, and in 2006 brought in a master-brewer to create a new line of traditional Czech beers. The company has struggled to survive, but the undeniable integrity and quality of it’s products has gradually earned Kout followers and awards, in its home country and abroad.

Koutska 12º is the brewery’s flagship beer, and was named Czech “Lager of the Year” in 2010 (as almost all Czech beer is lager, let’s just say “best beer”). The 12º is an absolutely heavenly balance of rich, round, clean Czech malt and flowery, spicy Saaz hops- you’d be forgiven for not wanting to stop at one, or ten.

This is traditional Czech beer, made the old way-according to 200-year-old recipes-with it’s own well water and all-local barley and hops, using either double or triple decoction mash. It’s also open-fermented and unpasteurized-subsequently it has had to be shipped in cold containers, door-to-door, from Kout na Sumavé to Shelton Brothers, to preserve it’s unique quality as a “real lager”.

    Style: Lager
    ABV: 5.0%
    Packaging: 20L kegs

ah google saves all, I could have asked the beer director but it looks like it's not a mystery. On a side note I wonder if Shelton also imports the Franconian kegs from Germany that Churchkey get once a year (the ones I also keep MISSING Grrr... ) :astonished: but that's a whole nother Keller story...
