Gonna brew a Licorice Stout or Porter after a session IPA, but need to know when to add the licorice. Last time I made a licorice stout I added the dried root at ~ 15min. This time I have what looks like an Italian refined licorice stick that although looks low in moisture, probably needs to get used up.

Any licorice experts out there? ... any proven recipes? ...

    I am no expert.
However, you just inspired me to pour some star anise extract into half a keg of porter.
    Good luck your quest.

I use the Italian licorice stick in an Imperial Stout. I add half a stick with 30 minutes left in the boil. I usually try to break it up a bit so it dissolves faster but that might not be worth the effort.
