A no brainer if there ever was one ; mild. The easiest beer of all to drink yet deeply satisfying.

The styles above are on the right track. I buy one of my friends Session Lager by Full Sail. Love their beer can't stand the 11 oz bottle though. Also FS flagship beer Amber Ale is light and wonderful. Me, can't believe anyone wouldnt like a 2 Hearted Ale!

Leinenkugel Red lager could be a good gateway for him

Just the ticket: Avery Liliko'i Kepolo. It's a Belgian-style witbier brewed with passion fruit. Delicious, refreshing, simply outstanding. Another great one is Sixpoint's The Crisp. Incredible take on the German Pilsener style. Both highly recommended.

No brainer in your neighborhood, perhaps- but that's a long way from California .

Agreed. Saison is a style that can make the transition to craft pretty easy. Sometimes it can be tough to find one under 6%. But, I bet he won't mind that too much if he finds a beer he's into.

I can definitely second a lot of what the other beer advocates have said so far with styles/specifics and also agree that going way left field like ssam said, with a style that's darker might be a good option too. I know I was into coffee and chocolate years before I was able to even get into beer so lots of those styles were easy for me to develop a pallet for. My personal two cents: brown ales, golden/blondes, kolsch, helles lagers, schwarzbiers, cream ales, california commons, hefe/kristal/dunkelweizens, wheat ales, vienna lagers, oktoberfests, and any of the bocks. Specifically and hopefully easily accessible to you: Firestone Walker Solace & 805, Weihenstephaner Kristall, Korbinian (Dunkel) & Festbier (Okto), Sierra Nevada's Oktoberfest, Anchor Steam Beer, Anderson Valley Summer Solstice, Sixpoint Sweet Action, Worthy Easy Day Kolsch, Sierra Nevada Summefest & Nooner, AleSmith Nut Brown, Humboldt Brown Ale ("Hemp Ale" it's sometimes named too), Lost Coast Downtown Brown, Deschutes Black Butte Porter, Eel River Porter, Mt. Shasta Weed Golden Ale - sorry getting long-winded so I'll stop. Try them yourself if you can too, you may be surprised about styles you would otherwise overlook starting to appeal to you too. Cheers and happy sampling!

Tons of good info in here, thanks everyone.

I have seen at least 10 or so of the beers mentioned here so thats a great start.

His birthday is in a few weeks, so I have some exploring to do!

Not that easy here either to find draught mild, though canned mild is sold widely

You could get him some mixed sixes of the beers mentioned here, maybe even sit down with him and try them together. You may find some new favorites too. Treat it as a joint quest. Another thing to consider is to find a craft beerfest to go to. Be sure to have a DD though!
