What type of ales are out there? I'm doing a tasting and would like suggestions for light colored beers such as blonde, pilsner, cream, IPA, golden sours, etc. Anything goes but it has to have coffee (but not a stout). Here's what we have so far:
    • Breakside Nano Challa
    • Breakside OG coffee
    • Stickmen Morning Sunshine
    • Sixpoint C.R.E.A.M.
    • Ballast Point Calm Before the Storm
    • Seguin Brewing Honey Pecan Cream Ale

For pilsner I recommend Pilsner Urquell and Lagunitas Pils. IPA. there's probably a thousand or more to choose from but Bells Two Hearted, Dogfish Head 60 and Goose Island IPA are solid. If you're interested in a Belgium give Duvel a try.

You're probably going to get as many suggestions as there are beers.

Thanks for the suggestion. You're absolutely correct; I didn't specify in the original post so I edited it. I'm looking for ales that have coffee involved, but are not stouts

Maybe it's borderline because it's a black IPA, but Mikkeller's Beer Hop Breakfast is amazing.

I've had a few coffee IPAs that were decent, but for the most part, I think it's just a not a great match.

Union Craft AM Gold and Jailbreak The White Russian are both excellent coffee cream ales. However, they are both draft-only with very limited distribution but IMO right up there with Calm Before the Storm (which I thought was fantastic).

I third this - it's awesome. Also, S.S. Yirgacheffe from Carton is terrific. Bean Flicker from Odd Side Ales is nice too, but you'd have to trade for that one as well.

*Edit - I was only pointing out Coffee cream ales and pales, nothing else. I may have read the OP's original query differently.

*Edit to the edit - I just read the OP's response indicating that Coffee things were the intent for the post. I'll stop editing now.....

Ithaca Java Power and Captain Lawrence Hopsomniac are two good coffee IPAs. Problem is they're both a little long in the tooth by now (the Java Power was exceptional fresh IMO) so I don't know they would do at a tasting now.
I had Carton Regular Coffee last year, it's friggin awesome.

Trillium's Day & Night is a blonde barleywine with coffee. Kinda comes across as a cream ale.

The very specific purpose of our first coffee-bier collaboration was to unequivocally break the convention of traditional heavy-roasted, dark coffee beers. To do this we’ve taken a berry-nosed and earthy Brazilian coffee (Sertãozinho) and merged it with a traditional, clove and banana-estered, Bavarian Wheat Beer (Weissbier). The result – a stimulating infusion marked by overtones of sweet and tart fruit balanced by a subtle-but-not-bitter roast of rich tannins.

Surly Coffee Bender - a Brown Ale
Also, Bent Paddle Cold Press Black (but that is pushing it... it is a Black IPA or a porter? :astonished:)

(You can order both from France 44, assuming they ship to WA)
