This won't come as rocket science, but enjoying beer can certainly make trying to stay fit and/or even trying to lose a few challenging. My struggle is compounded by the fact that I have a preference for the higher calorie beer styles (stouts, etc.). I also tend to drink beers with higher ABVs (Belgians, Imperial IPAs, etc.). Generally, the higher the ABV, the higher the calorie count.

So, question: What good craft beers would you recommend that are lighter in calorie load? They don't necessarily have to have "Light" in the name (as in Sam Adam's Light), though I would take those recommendations too. But I am looking for good session beers around the 5% ABV mark that don't pack on the pounds. I tend to like Spaten Original and Weihenstephaner Original a lot. They both hover around the 5% ABV mark. But I was just wanting to hear what other beers you all have found that are (1) lighter in calories and, importantly (2) great beers. I appreciate any feedback.

Why not just do a search for American Lagers and/or Pilsners and see what's distributed in your area? Those will all be in the 5% range and around 150 calories each.

OP, when I think craft beer I don't think about calories. You start cutting calories, then you start to cut out flavor.

That's certainly true. But that's my reason for posting. I want to hear of lower calorie beers that don't compromise on flavor. I'm believing that there must be some out there.

Sam Adams Noble Pils is a wonderful beer (even if it is Sam Adams) and Sierra Nevada Kellerweiss is a fantastic interpretation of a true German wheat. If you get Great Lakes, check out Dortmunder Gold. Fantastic beer.

Thousands availanle over here. session beers (ie beers under 4% ABV) are in plentiful supply.
Here's one weighing in at 3.4% but fights way, way above its weight , have a few of these and wonder why you bother with stronger beers.

Wow, that is rated good! I'll have to look for that one. I don't think I've ever seen it at my beer distributor, which is strange since I'm in NJ. Thanks for the recommendation.

I'm pretty sure you already found them, Weihenstephaner.

But realistically the whole calorie counting thing with craft beer doesn't seem like it will work very well.

    I'm not a doctor though....

Great recommendations. I had forgotten about Sierra Nevada Kellerweiss. In fact, I think I have a sixpack in my basement (it was well hidden though!). And I'm with you; Dortmunder Gold is excellent. But I haven't seen it at my beer store since early Summer.

Would love to try that. I have sadly never seen it on this side of the pond however.

That looks like a good one from its page here on BA. Unfortunately, I have never seen it in NJ.

Firestone Pale 31, Stone Levitation, Festina Peche, Sam Adams Cream Stout, etc.

There are tons of Craft beers around 5% and they all should be relatively low calorie.

Good recommendations. I have enjoyed Weihenstephaner Hefeweiss and Victory Prima Pils.

Wachusett Light IPA is actually not bad, very easy drinking but with flavor.

Boat beer is only available on Draft at Bars and the Brewery or occasionally in Cans at the brewery. They do not distrubute cans yet because currently they have a mobile canning system which comes to the brewery and can's X number of cans until the next time they return. They do not have their own canning line set up yet.
