This a recipe I dreamed up to utilize Brown malt from England, then decided to add a little bit of Belgian malts.
The result was one of the my favorite beers I've made and a real hit with people who've tried it. Based on an old historical English porter recipe I saw floating around, though I can't remember which one now.

    1) if Cara Gold is difficult or impossible to find, it can be replaced with Crystal 120L, though it may not have the same caramel/toffee flavors.
    2) the type of pale malt used is irrelevant (Marris Otter, Halcyon, Golden Promise, etc), so long as it's a British Pale malt.

Interesting - think I want to try this. How long did you ferment and/or age and what was your FG? I just brewed an English IPA with the 1098 yeast - I was startled by the lack of airlock activity, lack of krausen, yet still dropped by OG (from a low 1.036, must have mashed too low) to 1.004 in 4 days. Did you have a similar experience with the 1098? (used a smack pack, no starter)
