This a recipe I dreamed up to utilize Brown malt from England, then decided to add a little bit of Belgian malts.
The result was one of the my favorite beers I've made and a real hit with people who've tried it. Based on an old historical English porter recipe I saw floating around, though I can't remember which one now.

    Batch Size 5 gal.
    Estimated OG: 1.058 SG
    Estimated Color: 40.5 EBC
    Estimated IBU: 32.6 IBUs
    Brewhouse Efficiency: 72.00 %
    Est Mash Efficiency: 72.0 %
    Boil Time: 60 Minutes
    Amt / Name / %

4.4 lbs Pale Malt, Halcyon (Thomas Fawcett) 40.1 %
4.2 lbs Pale Malt, Maris Otter 37.3 %
    1.2 lbs Brown Malt 10.9 %
    0.88 lbs Ch√Ęteau Cara Gold 6.7 %
    0.66 lbs Special B Malt 5 %

    1) if Cara Gold is difficult or impossible to find, it can be replaced with Crystal 120L, though it may not have the same caramel/toffee flavors.
    2) the type of pale malt used is irrelevant (Marris Otter, Halcyon, Golden Promise, etc), so long as it's a British Pale malt.
    Amt / Name / IBUs

    0.7 oz Willamette [5.50 %] - Boil 10.0 min / 3.7 IBUs
British Ale Yeast (Wyeast Labs #1098) or (White Labs WLP 005)

Interesting - think I want to try this. How long did you ferment and/or age and what was your FG? I just brewed an English IPA with the 1098 yeast - I was startled by the lack of airlock activity, lack of krausen, yet still dropped by OG (from a low 1.036, must have mashed too low) to 1.004 in 4 days. Did you have a similar experience with the 1098? (used a smack pack, no starter)
