Don't forget the furious recipe changing and the quality of the beer decreasing.

But man, when you actually list out all the issues that have risen over the last couple years, maybe surly really is imploding.

I "heard" that Todd is going to AB-InBev to head up there new World Domination Craft Beer Division and finally make the ever elusive Magic Unicorn Beer.

The rumors are now speculations about Todd's future, not why Linda left.

I'm curious how many BAs have ownership in the companies they work for. If we work hard there long enough we're entitled to it, right?

This thread reminds me exactly of my grandma and the other church ladies sitting at the coffee shop gabbing about the other people in their small town.

You're not entitled to anything. You can negotiate whatever you want though. You could literally walk into your bosses office right now and tell him you want 10% of the company. For someone like Todd he may say, "Sure, we wouldn't be where we are today without you, and we can't afford to lose you; you've earned it l." For a lot of others they might say, "Get the fuck out of my office. "

And I'd bet a significant number of ba'ers own a piece of the company they work for. There's a difference between majority ownership and having some stock or options.

It's insane to think about your wife being fired from your place of employment.

And then to wonder, was Todd part of the decision making process.

Wrong. Nobody is entitled based solely on longevity or even significance to the business, but as mrpeterandthepuffers points out, anything can be negotiated. And negotiation is always a balance of necessity and timing. When Surly started (2005), that was a plateau point in the craft beer industry. Opening in a time like that, in a state with a relatively small craft beer scene, the risks would appear much higher than they would play out during the second wave of the boom. That is a great time for negotiation, because a start up would be calculating how long it may take to reach profitability and be willing to trade off shares (probably non-voting) in lieu of a higher salary. But then again, with no guarantee that those shares would ever have any tangible value, most people would still rather have the salary.

But in Surly's history, something unique happened that allowed for another opportunity for negotiation and that is the massive and far too expensive (for their size) expansion. They looked at a place like the Stone tap room and wanted to do something like that, even though Stone was easily 5 to 7 times larger than Surly at the time. $34 mil tied up and a massive increase in brewing needs would leave a great window to wave salary increase for "preferred" shares in the company (especially with the need for salaries for new hires).
