Just got back from a trip to liquor barn in wheeling. I was surprised to find a case of Sucaba there with 4/6 bottles left in it. I grabbed one and went to checkout, but the cashier said they weren't for sale because they were on hold for one of the employees (Armando). They said they only got one case in. Excuse me? I didn't feel like arguing, so I just said thanks anyways, and left.

I see lots of threads of people complaining about customers hoarding and buying out the store and leaving none for others, but to me it just seems to be the luck of the draw sometimes. I think seeing a store hold most of their allotment of a limited release beer for its employees instead of selling to its regular customers is really upsetting.... They should at least have the decency to take it off the shelves. And if Sucaba was shipped a few weeks ago to this area, why are they still sitting at the store instead of in Armando's cellar in his home? I have $ now for product on your shelves, but you wont sell it to a paying customer? I guess my $ isn't wanted at liquor barn.

Just wanted to see if anyone has had a similar experience.

I've had the exact same experience there as well. I actually followed them on twitter. A little while back they tweeted "Parabola has arrived". I happen to be off work that day and was there in less than 20 min. I go up to the front counter and ask about it; they tell me it's all been set aside and "held" already. I see a full case of it behind the counter...but apparently they would rather keep their employees happy than to actually sell to customers.

Mind you, I'm pretty close to LB, and used to go there quite frequently, so it's not just a case of "whale chasing". I now try to avoid going there if all possible.

Oh, and they have also been known to sell overpriced singles of Zombie Dust.

Not saying they're a terrible, gauging, shop or anything...just seem to be a little shady from time to time.

I'd say that tweeting something out that is "now available" to have customers show up and it's all being "held" already for other people (most likely store employees) qualifies as terrible. 20 minutes and they're already held for others? Sounds a little suspicious to me, probably more like they were all reserved by employees before they even hit the shelves and probably just tweeted it out for show. Shady b.s. plain and simple, I'd call them out and find somewhere else to shop.

I went to a shop in nw indiana when I lived on the border that pulled the same shady crap the couple times I went in looking for SHELF beers, popular shelf beers, but shelf beers none the less. I told them that I will be shopping elsewhere and that their practices are and I quote "bullshit". The shocked look on their faces was satisfying and I found a new place to get good beer.

"Reserved" bottles sitting out in plain sight? Overpriced singles of ZD?

    Yet another place to avoid.

This place sounds terrible. I came across this shop recently and thought about giving it a chance, but it will be on the avoid list now.

Armando sucks. I was there a week or two ago and saw a box of goodies next to the register. I asked if any of it was for sale and he said no, he was buying it after work. It contained Hopslam, BCBS, BCBBW, Prop(!), Behemoth, Parabola, and more that I'm forgetting. Jesus, at least hide it.

^^^Maybe it wasn't Behemoth, but there were at least 2 or 3 Three Floyds bombers and one of them had wax (can't remember the color).

Not that it changes the douchebaggery, but I wanted to correct myself.

Ha ha ha well at least I'm not the only one who has had this happen. Wonder how many other Bourbon County bottles they have in back for Armando until he gets his next paycheck. Must be nice to "hold" beer indefinitely without paying for it...

I think Armando's cellar is the back room at the Liquor Barn!

Exactly this. Otherwise he's not serious about buying them but holding them "just in case" right?

That sucks. Sitting on BCBS and others for at least what three months for someone to pay for it is wrong. While I don't like it, I can understand a place holding it for an employee for a few days, but months?

I feel this thread is not documented or researched. All the stuff said here is not true. Yeah he just so happened to get one bottle of Prop, but if you work your ass off at a liquor store wouldn't it be reasonable that you get the opportunity to buy a good beer here and there? They don't save all the good beer for their employees just some...I know for a fact they sold all the parabola, Sucaba, velvet merkin KBS, Zombie Dust, and Black Note only went to customers as well. So you're looking for whales they sell them. Armando is a good guy and had always been helpful, check your facts before you get pissed off that they aren't selling one of their employees beers that he paid for. If I had the opportunity to buy a few whales here and there if meant working at a liquor store I would do it.

I'm sure he's a good guy, but OP's original post is that those Sucabas were on the shelf. If they are reserved then what the hell are they doing on the shelf? I would walk out and give the owner a piece of my mind if he told me I couldn't buy a beer that was on the shelf for anyone to grab, especially when there are 4 bottles left.

Place reviews are an excellent way to get the message out on places like this.

It also gets the attention of the business, as us obviously the case for the poster who registered just to be part of this thread.

You joined yesterday just to post that? Is this Armando?

Anyway, I imagine you are referring to my post. I saw it with my own eyes. Thats pretty damn good documentation. I don't care that he's buying it, since I'm sure that happens in lots of places. I care that it was sitting right on the counter where everyone, including customers, can see it. Personally, I don't think that's professional. As I mentioned, at least put it out of plain sight.
