Has anyone else heard of a liquor store offering craft beer memberships that allow people the privilege of purchasing limited beer from them ahead of others, for a monthly fee?

I don't shop there anyway because they overprice their beer, but curious if this was common anywhere else.

Added benefit, you get the craft beer opinions of a couple of chucklehead local DJ's.

A a six pack, a bomber a month and first crack at limited beers sounds like a fair deal for 15 dollars a month. I would strongly consider it if it were in my area.

I'm missing what you are talking about with the bomber & six pack a month? With this, all you're basically getting is first crack (which is misleading, if they have 15 members all wanting a Founders Backstage beer, and they only get a case, which is uncommon, obviously 3 will miss out) at limited beers.

Good catch, that wasn't on the main splash advertisement for some reason, which completely changes things from my view. If I were new to craft beer, I might go for this, but I typically like to choose for myself. Not a bad deal after all.

Overall question still stands, still haven't heard of any other stores doing this, not even in Chicago. Could be wrong.

The clubs are more "informal" in Chicago, know what I mean? Nothing on paper, OK? It also helps if you know an alderman...

Is that kinda like the Black Note Secret Society, but instead of hoarding hipsters, it's more like something from an episode of Shameless?

Kahns does what we call the K-Klub. It's $10 for the year and gets you access to off premise tastings that we do throughout the year for both wine and beer. We also do free tastings once a month throughout the year. Each tasting has a theme and we normally pour between 25-35 beers. At each of our beer tastings we release allocated items for our K-Klub members only (they put their name in a bowl and we pull names for the "right to buy" during the tasting). Aside from that, for lets say Founders Backstage stuff, we will put out an email to the K-Klub telling people a date and time to call in to reserve a bottle. It is a much smoother way to handle limited releases.

This program is going on its third year now and all of the feedback has been great. It guarantees that regulars at least have the opportunity to buy limited beers if they aren't obsessed with release schedules or can't make it into the stores five times a week. It definitely pays for itself.

This sounds awesome and wish it was offered in my area.
