Here is a simple two part poll inspired by a facebook group to which I belong, and by a couple of posts here recently. It is a two part poll and please answer both parts

Please post in comments your numbers, and city/area where you live. The poll will give us the average of where we are in the local brewery movement, and where we are going. Your post will give the specifics. Feel free to add any comments or questions, or make any other relevant points you think of. Thanks for participating.

I now have 15 local breweries in the New Paltz, NY/ Mid Hudson Valley area, and 5 more are slated to open in the next year. My purchase of out of area beers that are shipped to my area has definitely gone down due to availability of great local beer. The quality of these local breweries varies from just okay to fabulous, with 3 I would consider to be top notch.

I think I have about 30 or more breweries within an hour. It might even be more than that.

I stopped by Peekskill brewing a few weeks ago. Really enjoyed their beer and wish that was closer.

Probably 10 or so in SW CT within an hour's drive. Not counting NYC, which would add another 5 or so. Quality also ranges from OK to superb.

Easily ten-plus breweries about an hour from me. I am 35-40 miles south of Boston so Harpoon, Trillium, Mystic, etc. I am less than 20 miles east of Providence which adds a couple. About 30 minutes from Newport, RI so Coastal Extreme, Buzzards Bay (or whatever they call themselves...wher Pretty Things brews). Little breweries like Goodfellows, Big Iron, Berkley Beer are almost in walking distance.

Openings I am not sure. I can hardly keep up with what already exists!

Cool thought. Interested to see where this goes.

5-6 within an hour of central SC, with none (as far as I know) slated to open within a year. Of those 6, one is making beer that I would consider above average.

Southwest Oakland County MI, so there are all the ones to the east such as Kuhnhenn, a couple to the north, a few in Detroit, Ann Arbor has 6, and there are 6 or so within 20 minutes. There are a boatload in planning in Michigan, it is hard to keep track. Heck, there are now 3 in Howell that I have not been to yet, used to hit all of them right after they opened, but that would be a job these days.

Some are pretty darned good, some are not so good. I can walk to one in my village, and do so once a week or so. They hired an experienced brewer, so the beers were good enough out of the box and improving as she dials in the system.

A week and half ago I was at a AHA function, talking to one of the homebrewers that has a brewery in planning, he stated that there are now 3000 breweries in planning. That might be the figure the BA knows about, as he was also a Brewers Association member.
