New Paltz is what, 1:30 or so from the city? 2:00? Anyway, here in the Bronx I estimated about 10 breweries within an hour. Let me actually check.

The local website lists 33, but some of these are just local outposts of brewers whose headquarters are farther away. Of the legit brewers within an hour there seem to be, wow! 19. And that's just in NYC. I'm sure there are a few more in Westchester.

Brew York City lists these (legitimately): Alphabet City, Bridge & Tunnel, Bronx, Brooklyn, Chelsea, Coney Island, Finback, Flagship, Greenpoint, Gun Hill, Keg & Lantern, Kelso, Other Half, Radiant Pig, SingleCut, Sixpoint, Third Rail, Threes, Transmitter.

I can also include Captain Lawrence, Broken Bow, and Peeksill for a total of 22. Very impressive.

It's a little over an hour depending on traffic, but I could throw in Sixpoint as well as Brooklyn.

I counted 17 within an hour, and it's probably more than that. Two new ones are scheduled for Greensboro soon.

I'm in western Michigan, Battle Creek to be exact, and that should be enough to describe the well-known wealth of breweries available to me. However, to be more precise, I have two breweries here in town (Arcadia and Territorial), Dark Horse is 12 miles east plus 4 breweries in Jackson (40 miles east), one brewery about 30 miles northeast, the dozen or so breweries in Kalamazoo (20 miles west), and then around 15 breweries in the Grand Rapids area which is about 60 miles northwest and is reaching the one hour travel limit. There are probably 5-6 more breweries in little towns in the areas between these cities too.

In the works: I'm looking at the current issue of Michigan Beer Guide, which keeps a close ear to the ground about new breweries here in Michigan, and the Guide reports that there are 7 new ones in the works in towns that are within an hour from here (plus two others are listed in little towns that I don't know where they are, but could be close by).

I left quite a few off on my list of 17. I didn't know the Old Bakery was open. I'll have to check it out. Have you been there yet?

Live in the city of Rochester, NY. We have many breweries within an hour of me, including, Rohrbach's, Swiftwater, Roc Brewing, Lost Borough, Knucklehead, Naked Dove, Three Huskies, Nedloh, Fairport Brewing, Twisted Rail, CB Craft Brewers, Three Heads, Victor Brewery, Stoneyard, Genesee. I can honestly say none of these breweries are making anything exceptional. There are a few breweries making pretty good beers, but a lot of the beer is just average to bad. It seems like new breweries open up and don't really know what they're doing yet. A lot of the breweries that recently opened would do best to have waited a few years to hone their skills before opening up.

If you extend it to 1.5/2 hours away, you get a myriad of Finger Lakes breweries, and all the breweries in the Buffalo area.

Good news. There are about ten breweries within an hours drive for me.
Bad news. Only one is within a thirty minute drive for me.
Good news. One of the three new breweries I know of is within five minutes.

46 in the Metro at my count, though I may be a couple behind (this number does include a Granite City and Rock Bottom). I'll have to take your word on the "within an hour" part, but that sounds pretty accurate.
