Hello BAs! I am traveling to London with some friends and wanted to hear everyones favorite places that are a must. I am staying at the W right near Leicester Square. Obv there are some quality places listed here on BA but we all know there are plenty more fantastic pubs. It would be great to find a couple nearby to make my locals while visiting as I will be there for a couple weeks. I am pretty familiar with the tube from past trips so any and all suggestions further from me would be appreciated as well. Also what are your favorite spots to grab traditional english fare like breakfast, fish/chips, pies etc. Thank you! Cheers
If you want the best range of beers, they are pretty much all listed. Craft, Cask, Tap in 3 words - all good pubs and regular hangouts of mine. Something a little off the beaten track - Jolly Butchers (7/8 mins walk Kentish Town tube). Good selection of micro (and often local) cask ales and great food (artisanl pork pies and hot pork rolls) Something new - http://www.beavertownbrewery.com/ Opened earlier this year, as well as their 3 house brews (on cask and bottle) they have guest cask, keg and 30 odd bottles. Also a BBQ restaurant and really busy the night we went so reserve! Good area for a crawl - London Bridge :- Market Porter, Wheatsheaf, Rake and Brew Wharf all about 3 minutes apart And as for Leicester Sq - nothing within a 5 minute walk other than perhaps the Harp (Chandos Place) The Old Coffee House off Regent Street probably the next nearest You are in the key tourist area which = high rent requiring big turnover so chain pubs/restaurants in the large Get on the tube or walk and you can hit most of the good bars within 20 or so minutes from your hotel
Euston Tap has a good list of stuff from all over the UK and Belgians/Germans on tap (if you never go to mainland Europe that is). Bree Louise near Euston Square station is also good, has a decent atmosphere and selection, and does good pies. It's right near Speedy's Cafe too (if you ever watch Sherlock ) Leicester Square though, it's not beer but you have to go to Chinatown and get some bubble/boba tea, it's brilliant stuff if it's too early or if you don't fancy anything alcoholic.
If you're up for the ultimate Fuller's pub then I would have to recommend The Star Tavern at 6 Mews W. Been there.
Or the one next to the brewery where if you go during lunchtime you can see the brewery staff drinking strongbow and carling. Was the most soul crushing site i'd ever seen.
That will be the Mawsons Arms I last popped by in March and it was a fairly even split of workers drinking Fullers from the cask allied to piss Zimbo's suggestion is a great little pub in a nice setting and they know how to keep their beer, food isn't bad either If you want the largest selection of Fullers on cask (8 hand pulls), plus all the bottles (not sure about Vintage - although you can pick them up at the shop next door from around £6 per bottle) and the freshest then I'd go with the Mawsons Be about 20/5 mins tube ride from central London to Turnham Green and just under a 10 minute walk
Sorry for the thread hijack. I'll be in London for a few days from the 17th, the last 3 trips including my wedding resulted in NO Kernel beers. Where will i be able to snatch some? I wont be there on Saturday when i believe the brewery is open. I'll be in the Greenwich area for the most part. Also where's a good pub to impress the elders of the tribe near The Savoy?
The Euston Tap tends to have good bottled supplies of Kernel, as does the Rake - but you will obviously pay 50% more than at the brewery The pub I'd reccomend within a 5 minute walk of the Savoy would be the Harp on Chandos place 5 (or 6?) cask lines, good sausage sandwiches and last years CAMRA pub of the year winner - it can get a little crowded though, especially between 5 and 8pm
Aye, i guessed buying away from the brewery would involve some extra ££ on top. was hoping to avoid it if i could as i am planning on bringing as many back oop north as poss for the Kernel starved natives. Cheers for the reccy.
Also worth noting they've run out of Past Masters in the shop. They also seemed to be selling a Marble beer.
Last time I was there I purchased a bottle of the Marble - Manchester Old Ale 8.?% - not had it yet. A tad overpriced mind!
I got my Amstel and Fosters loving friend into liking ale in the Mawsons Arms with a pint of London Pride
